Challenged Based Learning Big Idea: Environmental Preservation - Living Things-Butterflies

Essential Question How Can We Help In Our Environment To Preserve The Butterflies? conserv.video 3-4 mins conserv.video 3-4 mins

The Challenge Improve home, school, and community to preserve butterflies. environmental preservation

Guiding Questions How does the amount of food effect the painted lady butterfly caterpillar? Does the size container effect the butterfly larvae? What is the average growth of the painted l. caterpillars each day in centimeters? Did overfeeding them effect the caterpillar? What types of flowers help attract the butterflies? What types of pollution or prey can destroy the butterflies? Can President Obama help us with our environmental concerns or who else should we contact?

Guided Activities Students will examine and measure the length of each caterpillar in centimeters and log their findings into their IPads each day. Students will find the differences in each caterpillar and compare how much food was left. Students will write their reflections in their IPad at the end of this activity.Students will graph this information on the website Graph Club program.Graph Club program Students will share graphs and information in collaborative groups and create their own paper slide show in connection with learning organization skills (script writing) in writing workshop. This slide show can be written around this science experiment. Students will pick two facts from their IPad log and place it on the class wiki page for all students to read. Students will read scripts to each other in small groups for feedback. Student will design paper slide shows and using the flip camera to publish and share shows on the IPods. Teacher will place IPods in guided reading listening center for students.

Guided Activities Students will be divided into small groups to research various websites to find information on preserving butterflies: such as pollutants, flower gardens, prey, and global issues. Using their wikipages record what information they find on those specific topics. Students will practice writing friendly letters to these organizations asking several questions generated in their groups. After receiving this information, students will design posters on Microsoft publisher to promote environmental slogans to save the butterflies. Student will videotape environmental slogans to be sent to our local preservation organizations. They can assimilate and synthesize some of the information from their paper slide shows created earlier. Digital Citizenship Student will sell popcorn or possibly another fun raiser at lunch time to raise money for their preservation project.

Guided Resources Con’t Preservation Extensions and Fundraisers -used for project ideas and expert references to Penn State Extension. ?ID=1018&Type=Arhttps:// ?ID=1018&Type=Ar fund raising h128.shtml graphing programhttp:// h128.shtml

iTunes and IPods iPod activities : 101 Science- implement this program to look and research ideas for butterflies, paper slide videos and environmental preservation posters. Fun test knowledge in this program could be used as a fun- type game assessment. Flower Garden- access ideas for butterfly flower garden for students. Teaches students how nurture a garden. Some creative ideas, too. iBird Explorer- use as a research tool on how birds can effect the environment of butterflies. iTunes - could be used to inspire creative projects: paper slide videos and environmental posters. **butterfly song** butterflies around world music**butterfly song** butterflies around world music

Solution And Action Students’ challenges are stated clearly in guided guestions and guided activities enough to allow for a great variety of possible student solutions. Each student or group of students will base solutions on what they have researched and learned as they work through their activities.
