1. What do we learn about Mollie in this chapter? She tried to get out of work using illness, injury, or over sleeping. She’s a traitor to the animals because she is associating with the humans.

2. Explain the different techniques used by Napoleon and Snowball to gain support of the other animals. A. Napoleon: trained them to use guns for protection, canvassed support in between speeches, increased food production to prevent starvation B. Snowball: brilliant speeches, schemes like future plans to modernize the farm, worked for the benefit of all animals, angered other animals to create a revolution

3. Which animal refused to support either side? Benjamin Benjamin

4. Where did the dogs come from? They were Jessie and Bluebell’s puppies. Napoleon took them away from their mothers, saying that he would be responsible for their education.

5. How were the dogs’ attitudes reminiscent of Jones’ days? They reinforced one person’s desire for control or power. (Napoleon = Jones)

6. What happened to Snowball? He was chased away from the farm in fear of his life.

7. Why was Snowball expelled from Animal Farm? He was gaining too much power and support. Napoleon felt threatened by him.

8. What new changes were made after Snowball’s expulsion? No more Sunday a.m. meetings Questions settled by special committee of pigs No debates

9. How did Squealer justify these new changes? Napoleon is making an extra sacrifice for their benefit; it would prevent the return of Jones.

10. According to Squealer, who opposed the windmill and who supported it? Napoleon supported it. It was an excuse to get rid of Snowball.
