Preliminaries  Reconvene in small groups for 5 min. to choose individual speakers to represent Snowball’s or Napoleon’s responses to the debate moderator’s questions.  For the next 5 min., the speakers will rehearse their script presentations with their fellow group members.

Objectives:  The students will be able to stage a mock presidential debate between the characters Snowball and Napoleon  The students will be able to identify the signs of a totalitarian government in Animal Farm.

Focus Lesson: Debating…  As the debate moderator, I will ask the following questions to each group:  What is your stance on the proposed windmill?  How do you think Animal Farm should go about providing defense for the farm against potential security threats?  What do you see are your greatest attributes as a candidate for leading the animals of Animal Farm? You will have the opportunity to ask follow-up questions if you feel a speaker needs to clarify or justify a point further.

Focus Lesson: Homework  Read Animal Farm chapter 6.
