Reducing supermarket’s food & packaging footprint Cranberry Jam Team

Index Problems we are addressing Our solutions 1. Packaging scheme 2. Dispensers 3. Naturally beautiful fruit and vegetables 4. Earth-points

Problems we are addressing The UK produces around 10 million tonnes of packaging waste per year, most of which is disposed of in landfill sites. Packaging accounts for between 7 and 10 percent of the UK’s annual waste. (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency 2014) Seven million tonnes of food waste are thrown away in the UK every year (Love Food Hate Waste 2014)

1. Packaging scheme for supermarkets A - no packaging, i.e. bring in your own containers, and using the dispensers B - biodegradable, compostable C - low carbon, recycled, sustainably sourced D - ‘normal’ unsustainable packaging

2. Integrated Dispensers Customers Cheaper More choices Autonomy Reward points Environment Reduce package & food waste Raise awareness Supermarket Brand Differentiated Consumer loyalty Cheaper Sustainable

Examples International: Original UnverpacktLocal: New leaf Co-op

3. Naturally beautiful fruit and vegetables 40% of fruit and vegetables, worldwide are wasted because of their looks (Braw, Guardian 2013)

4. Earth-points and loyalty cards Earth-points correspond to the packaging rating scheme of supermarket products Points are redeemed through discounts/vouchers Supermarket  Loyalty of customers  Feasible  Competition  Added brand value Customers Discount incentives Awareness of their environmental impact Easy to do

Survey 61 online & 15 face-to-face participants
