Craig Schock, 2004 What if you become ill during the exam? The university has many regulations regarding exams: You must choose to finish the exam or leave If you choose to finish, there can be no deferrals If you choose to leave, you MUST go immediately to a doctor so that the doctor can assess your condition. You must obtain documentation about your condition from the doctor If you do not immediately go to a doctor or you do not receive documentation from the doctor, you will not be permitted to apply for a deferral

Craig Schock, 2004 U of C Exam Regulations Students cannot leave the room within 30 minutes of the start of the exam Students cannot leave the room in the last 15 minutes: If you finish in the last 15 minutes, you must stay seated until the instructor picks up all of the exams There will be an announcement when there is 15 minutes left in the exam You must have U of C ID and it must be on your desk at all times during the exam. You must sign (not initial) the sign-in sheet

Craig Schock, 2004 Final Exam Breakdown I have analyzed the exam and the questions break down as follows: Chapter 1-3: No direct questions Chapter 4: 2.5 % Chapter 5: 7 % Chapter 6: 25 % Chapter 7: 17 % Chapter 8:8 % Chapter 9:21 % Chapter 10:19 % Chapters 11-14:13 % Note: these numbers do not add up to 100% because some questions cover multiple chapters.

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapter 4 - Processes Minimal coverage Covered by midterm Mostly in support of the rest of the course

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapter 5 – Threads Low coverage (7% of exam) Assignment #3 covered threads well. Focus on practical side of threads. Theory was covered by midterm.

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapter 6 – CPU Scheduling High coverage (25 % of exam) Bringing together of many aspects of scheduling into 1 question Harder than midterm.

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapter 7 – Process Synchronization High coverage (17% of exam) Related to threads One of the most important topics in this course.

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapter 8 – Deadlocks Medium Coverage (8 %) In relation to chapter 7 and 5 Better to understand preventing and avoiding deadlocks Understand graph theory surrounding avoiding deadlocks.

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapter 9 – Memory Management High coverage (21 %) Segmentation not a focus of the text or the course. You will be asked to do.

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapter 10 – Virtual Memory High coverage (19 % of exam) Algorithms, theory.

Craig Schock, 2004 Chapters 11, 12, 14 – File systems Medium coverage (13 %) Implementation and Mass storage emphasized more.

Craig Schock, 2004 Tips and Strategies Read the exam fully. I have proofread the exam but there is always the possibility of a mistake. eg. Pages out of order, miss-numbered questions, etc. If in doubt, ask. Read the questions FULLY! The exam is 18 pages. However, 6 pages of that contain tables, some work space and scrap paper. Bring more than one pen, pencil, a sharpener, and an eraser! A ruler will also be useful.
