Why Outreach?

 Investing in our future  The kids we reach out to could be future STARS

What We Do at FSU

 Target STEM programs  Build relationships early  Create a bridge from high school to college

Technology Student Association (TSA)  Nationwide organization promoting personal growth and leadership  Focus on the disciplines of technology, innovation, design and engineering  STARS FSU has a strategic partnership with Florida TSA  Provide help with two statewide conferences  First-hand interactions with the students

Leadership Conference  Mentoring teams of middle and high school students  Involved in working on events  Reaches 300 kids  Functioning as both mentors and team leaders

Team Leaders

STARS member Lauren Johnson presents to TSA Leaders about public speaking and presentation. STARS member John Nguyen works with his group on team building exercises.

State Conference  Judge competitions of students  Different interaction than the leadership conference  Reaching 1300 students and parents  Functioning as judges and college connection

Tech Days at FSU  We bring the schools to us  Activities include:  Tour of Seminole Productions  3D movie theater  Q&A with students  Campus scavenger hunt

Bay High School

Wakulla High School

On the Road  Focus on schools with a STEM/TSA program  Reach out to schools with science/technology clubs

Lake Asbury

How to Manage Outreach

Process  Build a database of potential schools  Find a contact to reach out to at each school  We identify teachers or advisors that may run tech-related groups and clubs  Cultivate the contacts to schedule a visit

How to Manage Outreach  We talked about maintaining a database of schools and contacts, discuss how this can help you manage and expand your outreach efforts.  Break into groups of 5

Funding

 Show your school’s administration the benefits  The organization you work with may be able to financially support some of your efforts  Goal is to show you are investing in your school’s future and the future of the students.

Where to Get Funding  Every school is different  How would YOU go about getting funding?  Go back into your groups and discuss

Tracking Outreach

Tracking Success  This is the hardest part of the outreach efforts

How to Track Outreach  Follow up!  How would YOU track it?

Impact  Thousands of students made aware of the STARS program  4 year partnership (and potentially much more!)

Tips  Do: Reach out to multiple people at one school  Don’t: Wait for someone to you back

Tips  Do: Talk to the kids  Don’t: Be a walking advertisement for your school
