Jersey Panther Defense Swarm & Attack Relentless

Who Are Jersey Panthers? Mississippi Valley Conference Champions Finished 10-1 in IHSA Class 5A (Quarterfinals) Allowed 12.5 PTS/Game throughout season Created 27 Turnovers in 2012 season Conference leader in sacks, interceptions, fumble recoveries, and tackles for loss

What Defense Do We Run? Call ourselves a 3-3 Stack Defense But we can pick up anything from the “Junkyard” Are able to bounce from our 3-3 into 4-2, 4-4, 3-4, 5-2, 5-3, 6-2, and 4-3 We can & do play them all but the key is in the attitude and the personnel Can handle tons of variety in offenses we see

What Offenses Do We See? Week 1: 2 Back Spread, 1 Back Spread Week 2: Pistol Wing, DBLS, 2 Back Spread Week 3: Power I, Single Back w/ TE Week 4: DBLS, Trips, Empty, 2 Back Spread Week 5: DBL Wing, Unbalanced Week 6: Wing T Week 7: Empty, Wishbone Week 8: Power I, Wildcat Week 9: Power I, Single Back w/ TE

Panther Attack Defense Emphasis on ATTACK mentality Must be RELENTLESS to the ball all 11 guys Will SWARM the ball together as 1 solid unit Emphasize TURNOVERS: Ball always belongs to us and we must take it back mentality Must have a FEARLESS attitude!!!

Panther D Personnel D-Line Tank= strong side end (stronger of two ends) Dog= weak side end (quicker of two ends) Nuke= nose guard D-Line is where all calls begin Must be a strong point Players here must be strong but also very quick off the ball

Panther D Personnel LB’s 1= strong side outside backer(able to play 9 tech & stronger on run) 2= strong side inside backer(the best reader & tackler, must be aggressive) 3= middle backer(strongest backer who has quickness to move both directions) 4= weak side inside backer(fast & smart, will blitz the most & be in coverage most) 5=weak side outside backer(fastest of all LB’s, able to play man and act as 2nd safety)

Panther D Personnel DB’s Field Corner= fastest of the 2 corners who likes to play more zone Boundary Corner= more physical of 2 corners who likes to play man more Free Safety= smartest & most dedicated player on defense, must have hunger to be physical, able to play solid man coverage, able to communicate & lead defensive alignment

Panther D Pre-Game Philosophy Emphasize individual skills 1st Group skills come 2nd Team D is the final piece of the puzzle All positions emphasize aggressive play All positions emphasize tackling & turnovers Educate players on opponent’s scouting report Ensure all players know alignment & assignment first and foremost

Panther D Game Philosophy Must create turnovers Must align properly to be in best position Take away top 2 players of each opponent Take away opponent’s most comfortable plays Force them into areas of discomfort Force situations where we can be most aggressive such as 3rd and long Hit on every single play

Panther D Calls Act as an amoeba on defense; able to move to different look at any point in time Able to bring pressure from any angle Able to keep coverage hidden Checks exist based on scouting report Calls go: Formation, Stunt, Blitz, Coverage – Ex: Nasty Weak 4 Green

Run Defense Swarm ball carrier Force ball to where most help will be Get penetration into backfield before play develops fully with the blocks Always have one more in box than they have blockers Take away inside quick hitters first Eliminate big plays with speed and tackling

Pass Defense Imperative to learn physical man before anything else in coverage-it’s our foundation Take away quick throws with alignment first Take all WR’s off their “route lines” and force QB to throw uncomfortable balls Force longer throws further toward sideline Set traps by disguising coverage every time Use blitz & physical coverage to help deep balls
