Roger Stone started at UTMB on July 11,1980, as a Photographer for the Biocommunications Department.

Roger worked in Biocommunications for 18 years, where he excelled in all aspects of photography, specializing in photomicrography, as well as patient and technical research photography.

Roger rose to the position of Photo Lab Director and was always concerned with satisfying his customers’ needs.

Roger transferred to Logistics in 1998, where he served as a Process Systems Coordinator and a Distribution Manager.

Roger’s last position was Logistics Program Manager. He was in charge of managing UTMB’s receiving and delivery operations, as well as the surplus inventory operation.

Roger also assisted UTMB with its commuting and transportation needs. He drove a vanpool himself and coordinated all the vanpools for UTMB.

Roger married Linda in 1990.

Roger and Linda have two children: Eric, 14, and Elizabeth,12.

Roger and family celebrated his mom’s 90 th birthday in May 2008 with his sister, Valerie.

Outside of work, Roger’s passion was sailing. It was this passion that led him to be a safety officer for the Texas A&M University offshore sailing team.

In June of this year, Roger and the Texas A&M sailing team entered the Regatta de Amigos, an offshore race from Galveston to Veracruz, Mexico.

The five survivors were cared for at UTMB. The story of Roger’s heroics came out during media interviews.

The students trapped below deck said Roger’s quick action helped guide them to safety. But Roger was unable to save himself.

Roger Stone was many things: a friend, a husband, a father, a son, a brother, an uncle, a photographer, a sailor, a veteran UTMB employee, a Texas A&M safety officer---and a hero. Roger was a participant in life, not a mere bystander. He will be missed by all who had the great fortune to know him.
