Reporting There are many different styles of reporting and journalism covered by The State Press such as  Arts & Entertainment (A&E)  Sports  Opinions and  News which includes Student Media, University News, Business, Politics and others The job of a journalist working for The State Press includes  Accurately reporting on information the ASU audience is curious about  Finding multiple sources per story  Pitching new, exciting and innovative stories  Collaborating with other reports and photographers  Writing on strict deadlines  Adhering to University policies  etc Reporting 2

Photography Being a photographer for The State Press is more demanding than it sounds. It is necessary that a hired photographer has an open and flexible schedule with the luxury of their own car. Having these two qualities leads to opportunities for exciting photo stories. Also, being a photographer does not just mean taking great photos but also understanding the stories’ angle and writing a well-written and short caption for each photo. A photo and it’s caption should be able to tell the reader the entire story within two sentences. CycleLights are battery-operated LED lights that wrap around bicycle tires to create a trendy and safe way to ride at night. The company was founded by two ASU students: Lavell Dishmon, a Senior Engineer major, and Charles John, a Junior Biomedical Engineer. Blogging Multimedia Light The Lamp produced by Erin Patrick O’Connor State Press News In today’s digitized world, a journalist cannot only be a reporter or a photographer, they need to be everything. Having the ability to shoot, edit and produce sound and video pieces is crucial in the world of the press. Many editors will not hire a journalist who is not fluent with online editing anymore. Reporters need to be adaptable if they want their news to be heard. 4

Editing The AP (Associated Press) style is utilized when writing for publications. However, it is found that more often than not, grammar errors are most found in writing, not technical/style issues. It is the job for Copy Editors to thoroughly proofread and journalists’ story before it goes live/to print. The State Press has many Copy Editors, usually there is one editor for every section.(Associated Press) Editing 5

Deadlines Publication The story and it’s photos are published online at statepress.com the moment they are ready The weekly paper is printed and distributed every Wednesday morning around ASU campuses Reporters and Photographers work quickly 3. The Reporter must write and edit their story within a weeks time, if not shorter. The final version is to be hosted on CAMYAK for their editors to view before finally being published The Photographer needs to have taken and edited their photos in 12 hours or less before sending it to their editor for publication A story gets pitched 1. The Reporter begins finding facts and sources for their news story 2. The story is put on CAMYAK or GoogleDocs for photographers and multimedia artists Deadlines in the newsroom are crucial! Deadlines 6

Reporters Sources Photo- graphers Multi- media artists Editors Communication For a news staff to be successful, communication between reporters, editors, photographers, multimedia artists, news sources, publication companies, university staff, and anyone else involved in the production of The State Press is absolutely imperative. A quiet newsroom is never a good sign. Communication 7

As with any team of journalists, The State Press must adhere to The Code of Ethics. This code ensures that journalists  Are not fabricating facts for the sake of storytelling,  Plagiarizing whatsoever  Are writing to tell the news, not harm or enable any other person  Remain accountable  Are not telling one-sided news  etc 8 Photography Photo courtesy of brettoppegaard.blogspot.com brettoppegaard.blogspot.com

Delivery Publication During the Spring and Fall semesters, a print edition of The State Press is released and delivered to newsstands across all four of the ASU campuses every Wednesday morning. It is such a gratifying feeling for reporters and photographers to see their work accessible for the thousands of ASU students, faculty and community members to enjoy.
