Book Review for EDEE3380 Dana Norman Wong, H.K. & Wong, R.T (2004).The First Days of School: How to be an First Days of School: How to be an effective teacher. Harry K. Wong effective teacher. Harry K. Wong Publications. Publications.

10 Things I Learned 1.Education is not teaching people things they don’t know. But teaching behaviors they don’t currently practice. 2.3 Characteristics of an effective teacher. Positive expectations, classroom management, lesson mastery. 3.The effective teacher dresses appropriately as a professional educator to model success. 4.Invitational versus disinvitational education 5.A well-managed classroom is a task-oriented and predictable environment 6.The successful teacher is ready – in many different areas 7.How to call the home, with an action plan already discussed with the student 8.Of the four kinds of learning time, only academic learning time has a direct correlation with achievement 9.The role of teaching is not to cover but to uncover the lesson by telling the students what is expected. 10.Differences between workers and leaders

10 Things I Plan to Apply 1.Look for an induction program or a mentor teacher 2.Use current research-based practices 3.Having positive expectations (and environment) starting the first day 4.Be intentionally inviting – I believe that I do this unintentionally as well. 5.All of Unit C – classroom management from day one 6.Prepare the entire classroom 7.Have a welcoming activity – first thing, first day 8.Prepare my first request so that it will get a positive response 9.Use the idea from Ed Hockenberry about absent students 10.Make a poster that says: Cooperate with each other – Compete only against yourself

Would Recommend to Others This is a great resource. I think I agree with the whole book, except maybe the part about the dress code. I agree with no jeans & t-shirts, but comfortable shoes are a must, you can still dress for success and respect, and be comfortable doing it. It also goes along with our text beautifully.
