The Algonquin tribe was one of the first people in the Connecticut area Their homes were called wetus or wigwams Used spears made out of wood, rock, and bone to hunt animals They hunted moose, deer, turkey, and other local animals They also fished and farmed Men hunted animals and women planted and harvested crops Children helped parents with daily chores

The first setters were English puritans that came from Massachusetts England laws had forced English to belong to the church of England Most settlers wanted to settle in the Connecticut river valley where they could build villages and set up their own government The capital switched between New Haven and Hartford every other year Between , three groups of puritans left the Connecticut river valley Windsor was the first European settlement in Connecticut in 1633

Had to clear lands to build homes and farms At first homes were made of sticks and mud Later made small wooden homes Most families centered life on the farm and planting crops Planted corn, pumpkin, and beans Also picked wild blueberries, strawberries, and nuts Men took care of the farms Women stayed at home and took care of the house Most colonists lived and worked on farms

Population growth almost doubled from 1750 to 1774 By 1774 the population of Connecticut was 191,342 From 1689 to 1763 British fought the French for lands in North America American-Indians sided ( Joined forces) with the French In 1763 the British defeated the French and the Indians and controlled all of the lands east of the Mississippi

When Connecticut grew into towns and cities people’s lives began to change Colonists didn’t have to farm to live, merchants built stores Wagon makers, Black smiths, and shoe makers open stores Connecticut was Famous for manufacturing Foundries melted raw material and metal Craftsmen made tools candlesticks and shoe buckles In Connecticut craftsmen created brass buckles for shoes

Tinsmiths shaped tin into useful items Many workers in Connecticut were not paid because they wanted to learn a skill and some did it to get into the Americas AND SOME HAD NO CHOISE Blacksmiths were very important in the Connecticut colony APPRINTINCES WORKED WITH A CRAFTSMAN TO LEARN THEIR TRADE OR SKILL THE LENGTH OF INDENTURD SERVENTS WERE 7 YEARS CRAFTSMEN GAVE THEIR APPRINTENCES CLOTHS TOOLS AND MONEY TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS (Continued)

Most people were Puritans Faith centered around reading the bible Learning to read was a very important to the Connecticut colony In 1650 Connecticut passed a law that said any town with 50 or more families must go to school Towns were built around a meeting house Had church at the meeting house on every Sunday Meeting house also served for the town hall for meetings and elections Church leaders ran the Government

Connecticut wanted a different Government They wanted a type that the people ruled the Government In 1662 King Charles II granted the colony their charter Which allowed them to rule over themselves In 1682 England’s King James II wanted New England to be one colony Sent Sir Edmund Andros to govern new England but he had to get chartered first He met up with a group of Connecticut Colonists During the meeting, the candles went out and Joseph Wadsworth snuck out with the Charter ( Continued)

By 1763 colonies had busy cities and large farms People thought they were outgrowing Britain rules At this time Britain was putting taxes on paper, sugar, and tea In September, 1774 the colony sent representatives to the continental congress The men that went tried to come up with an agreement with Great Britain The efforts of these men failed 1n 1755 the revolutionary war broke out
