 Born in Portugal in 1394  Third son of King John 1 of Portugal

 At age 21, Prince Henry led a military force that captured the Muslim outpost of Ceuta.  At age 24, he founded a school for sailing and exploring at Cape St. Vincent in Portugal.  The school included libraries, an astronomical observatory, ship building facilities, a chapel, and housing.

 Henry’s school’s purpose was to teach navigational techniques to Portuguese sailors, to collect geographical information, to develop new navigational equipment, and to sponsor expeditions.  The school wanted to spread Christianity as well.  Although Prince Henry did not sail on his expeditions, he became known as Prince Henry the Navigator because of his school.
