UNIT 3 WEEK 1 Theme: The Old Southwest Juan Verdades

Genre: Folk Tale A folk tale is a story based on the traditions of a people or region which is handed down from one generation to the next and becomes legendary.

Strategy: Analyze Story Structure Thinking about and analyzing story structure helps you understand how the characters, setting, and plot work together.

Skill: Character, Setting, Plot Setting is the time and place in which a narrative occurs. Plot is the series of events that take place in a story. These events give the story a beginning, middle, and end. The characters in a story are who the story is about.

foreman A worker who supervises a group of workers, as in a factory or on a farm. The foreman was in charge of seeing that the cars came off the assembly line in time.

employee A person who works for a person or business for pay. A good employee is one who always does his or her best on the job.

GRITTED Ground or held tightly clamped together, as with the teeth. The weight lifter gritted her teeth as she lifted 300 pounds.

fulfill To carry out or bring to completion; cause to happen. Miguel was able to fulfill his promise as a musician by mastering the piano.

flourish To grow or develop strongly or prosperously; thrive. In order for a child to grow and flourish, he or she must eat nutritious food and get lots of rest and exercise.

gleefully In a joyous or merry way. The children ran gleefully toward the ice-cream truck.
