Copyright © 2009 by Stan Pope Page 16 Things to think about 1. When during the year should such a competition be held? Outdoors? Weather/temperature considerations. e.g. Avoid "wet" events during cold weather!

Copyright © 2009 by Stan Pope Page 17 Things to think about 2. How much lead time is needed between announcement and event? Might depend on... how complicated is the building activity? what materials are allowed? rules to be met?

Copyright © 2009 by Stan Pope Page 18 Things to think about 3. What equipment is needed? What are sources? Make: cost, storage Borrow: ask for sources at Cub Roundtable, check "Resources" section of district website

Copyright © 2009 by Stan Pope Page 19 Things to think about 4a. How should the competition be conducted? Everyone at once Activities like fishing and kite flying can have everyone competing at one time. Criteria like “first” or “highest” or “biggest” work easily if you can keep track of who is who!

Copyright © 2009 by Stan Pope Page 20 Things to think about 4b. How should the competition be conducted? A few at a time Events like Pinewood Derby and Raingutter Regatta have predefined courses over which entrants compete. A carefully constructed combination of “heat scoring” is applicable.

Copyright © 2009 by Stan Pope Page 21 Things to think about 5. What rules are required? "Inherit" rules from a related district event? Should you require Official kits? Or allow Alternative sources? Add-ons?

Copyright © 2009 by Stan Pope Page 22 Things to think about 6. Rules... KISMIF. Clear, concise, precise. And publicize early!!!
