The BAM in Business Intelligence Topics: 1)Understanding what BI is 2)How you can offer BI to your clients (today) 3)How BI can be cost-effective for mid-market clients 4)The skills you need to implement BI 5)The benefits of a mid-market BI solution 6)Cost-justifying a BI solution

Understanding Business Intelligence Business Intelligence (BI) is the ability for an organization to become more aware of conditions affecting their business and, in so doing, allow staff & management to make more timely & intelligent business decisions. But there are two types of BI technologies that support this rationale, and although both enable improved corporate intelligence, they do so in very different ways... The BAM in Business Intelligence

Two Types of Business Intelligence 1) Strategic / Tactical 2) Procedural Most information written about BI is in reference to #1. “Big picture”, “50,000 foot view”, “trend analysis”, “slice & dice” The BAM in Business Intelligence

Strategic / Tactical BI is very popular because Sees anything & everything (“more is better”) -- It looks cool -- It’s fun to use (“ITI” Response) Strategic / Tactical BI is ideally suited for C-level executives and business analysts whose jobs it is to review and analyze business data, looking to spot trends, opportunities, and problem areas. (“Looking for what we don’t know”) The BAM in Business Intelligence

Procedural BI is less common because You have to know what you’re looking for (harder setup) -- Typically a background process (not flashy/fun) -- You need to know what the response should be -- Requires definition of workflow Procedural BI is best suited for both LOB managers and employees as an enabler to perform their duties more efficiently and to make more intelligent (& timely) decisions regarding their everyday activities. The BAM in Business Intelligence

Organizations Need Both. Strategic / Tactical BI uses an interactive tool that performs in-depth, ad-hoc analysis, presents results in easy-to- understand formats, and lets users determine strategic responses. Procedural BI uses a rules-based engine that performs advanced data analysis and executes pre-determined procedural workflow as response actions. The BAM in Business Intelligence

Bottom Line on BI Types: Strategic / Tactical BI has an appealing look & feel; it can be expensive to buy and challenging to quantify the ROI. Procedural BI is more about selling an “engine”. It is typically inexpensive to buy, easy to implement, & quick to get an ROI. Remember – BI is not a technology; it is a goal that can be reached through the use of technologies. The BAM in Business Intelligence

Procedural Business Intelligence Component #1: Identification of business conditions Any clients who have changed their monthly purchasing by over 25% Any clients who have more than 3 overdue invoices Any salesreps with less than $10,000 in their pipeline Any orders with a discount over 15% Any leads who have not been contacted this week Any deals in our CRM app for clients on hold in our Finance app The BAM in Business Intelligence

The BAM in Business Intelligence Capability: Automated, Real-Time Data Monitoring 1)Data retrieval from multiple systems 2)Linking of data between systems 3)Automated “gathering” of this data (And the most widely-used application is... ??? )

The BAM in Business Intelligence Procedural Business Intelligence Component #2: Automated response to conditions If a client changes their monthly purchasing by over 25%, alert the salesrep. If a client has overdue invoices, re-send them their statement. If a salesrep have less than $10,000 in their pipeline, send their manager a Pipeline Report. If there are orders with a discount over 15%, fax the order to Finance for approval. If a prospect has not been contacted within 3 days, schedule a follow-up phone call. If there are deals in our CRM app for clients on hold in our Finance app, alert our CFO.

The BAM in Business Intelligence Capability:Automated alerts & workflow 1)Multiple means of access (devices). 2)Pushed intelligence delivery 3)Ability to update applications 4)Ability to move data between applications (Analysis without action is #1 failure of BI initiatives)

The BAM in Business Intelligence Business Intelligence Priced for the Mid-Market (MSRP $1,800 - $8,695)

The BAM in Business Intelligence BAM = Business Activity Monitoring = Procedural BI Sage KnowledgeSync provides: 1) BI-level analysis 2) Workflow actions (including alerts, form & document delivery, report generation, & application updates) End Result is a reduction in “Business Latencies”

The BAM in Business Intelligence Skills Needed: Procedural BI - - Process definition (“if / then”) -- Database schema -- Reporting knowledge (Crystal) -- configuration -- (Optionally) DB Write-back tools

The BAM in Business Intelligence The Benefits of Procedural BI: Tactical Business Intelligence is all about analysis. Procedural BI combines analysis with alerts and workflow. Among its unique benefits are: Does not require extra staffing Delivered versus requested analysis No lag time (latency) between awareness & action Integrates & application data Anytime / anywhere communications Analyzes data between applications (enterprise-level view)

The BAM in Business Intelligence The ROI of Procedural Business Intelligence 1) Task Automation / time savings 2) Reduced “latency” (quantifiable response time) 3) Reduced chance of human error 4) Increased organizational consistency 5) Trackable exception management 6) Empower users/partners/clients with self-service Single-Source solution simplifies IT management
