INTERSECTORAL ACTION FOR HEALTH PROJECT The Intersectoral Action for Health Project (IHAP) as a strategy for local development. The Intersectoral Action for Health Project (IHAP) is a capacity building project focusing on developing human and institutional capacity to promote intersectoral action for health as a strategy for local development. A vital core principle of Brazil’s social development strategy is the A vital core principle of Brazil’s social development strategy is the strengthening of local capacities to promote a better life for people and their communities. This strategy is used in federal government programs of poverty reduction and social inclusion, such as the Family Health Program. Within this context, the IHAP will offer capacity building opportunities to six selected communities across the country to strengthen their competence to promote intersectoral action for health and local development.

Local Projects’ Strategies  To sensitize and to mobilize local actors;  To foster community participation;  To build the capacity of health professionals and local communities  To strengthen partnerships (local and federal academic centers, managers, social movements, among others);  To stimulate the creation of networks;  To develop and to support intersectoral action in health.

Local Projects’ Goals Americana – healthy municipalities To map the community actors of Health Promotion in Praia Azul, municipality of Americana/ SP Curitiba – healthy environment To support the public management focused on urban development, recognizing the importance of social responsibility and intersectoral action for the construction of a democratic and fair city for all. To foster the ongoing partnership among academia (universities), local government and private sector, as well as other formal and informal partners. Goiânia – academia and local government To produce evidence and knowledge on Health Promotion based on Community Health and Family Health Program ‘ actors, in close partnership with the Federal University of Goiás and the Local Department of Health.

Local Projects’ Goals Recife – healthy municipalities network To build up the Pernambuco network on healthy municipalities, focusing on monitoring and evaluation strategies and the ongoing process to reduce inequalities. Sobral – health family program To improve primary health practices, through the capacity building on the Family Health Educational Program at the School of Health Promotion in Sobral. Manguinhos – health and local development program To promote multi strategic goals for social changes toward the development and support of an integrated public agenda and multi- sectoral investments addressing community participation, citizenship and quality of life in Manguinhos – RJ.

Project Challenge Each site presents their local actions, methodology, process and expected results. Group identifies together the main intersectorial actions and common lessons.

Strategic Considerations The Intersectoral Action for Health Project (IAHP) is a capacity building project, focusing on developing human and institutional capacity to design and deliver programs on intersectoral action for health, which will contribute to social development greater social equity in Brazil. The main focus for the IAHP Year 2 is on contributing to a comprehensive and coherent approach to address local partners interests on 3 main areas: intersectoral collaboration, social determinants of health, and monitoring and evaluation methodologies. Together, these 3 priorities will contribute to strengthen local capacity to promote and sustain health outcomes.
