Cognitive Commodity #3... Pg. 30 O Look at our first sentence, and mimic it to create your own. “When they reached the old man’s shack, the boy took the rolls of line in the basket and the harpoon and gaff, and the old man carried the mast with the furled sail on his shoulder.” -Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea

Share your sentence within your group O Choose 2 sentences to write. The other two people write the sentences on paper to hang on the wall.

Slip or Trip? questions... Back of pg. 35 We are investigators trying to determine what really happened at this crime scene. Question: Can we believe what Queenie says?

CLAIM: Come up with your final claim. 1-Arthur’s feet are facing up the stairs. 2-________________ 3-________________ 4-________________ 5-_________________ As a rule, if someone fell Facing up the stairs, That was the direction He/she was originally Walking. Queenie is probably lying about Arthur falling DOWN the stairs.

Passing back your evidence, rules, and claims Look over them. ~~Do you have specifics about the picture listed under claims and are they relevant? (EX. Arthur’s feet are facing up the stairs.) ~~Do you have the rules written with the following: 1)As a rule... 2)Make sure it is written as a GENERAL rule, meaning it can apply to anything in life. (EX: “As a rule, if someone falls facing up the stairs, that is the direction he/she was walking.”) ~~Do you claims answer the question, “Can we believe what Queenie says?” (Ex: Queenie is probably lying about Arthur falling down the stairs.)

Let’s find evidence and create a rule. Evidence: Regina made a 96/A on her 9 weeks test. Rule/Warrant: As a rule, when someone studies, they make a higher grade than when they don’t study. Conclusion: Regina probably studied for her test. (Probability= qualifications)

Now, it’s time to compose a report. If we were really an investigative team and if this were a real crime, to whom would we have to write a report? What would we need to explain to the chief? 1) Let’s compose an outline of what we should include. Should we explain when we arrived on the scene?

Next... Let’s organize our outline into a paragraph to summarize what we experienced and found. I’ll type it for us on the overhead!

KIDBLOG English3-4-4 English5-6-2 English7-8-3 Let’s present our thinking about the situation. Your turn to work through your evidence and rules (warrants) that allow you to interpret the evidence. Include the following: AT LEAST 5 pieces of evidence, each with an APPROPRIATE warrant and any necessary explanation. Begin with your CLAIM! That will be your first sentence. Then continue with “First, ______________________.” (follow with your rule- beginning with if, when, etc.)
