History  Buddhism was founded by a religious teacher Siddhartha Gautama  Also known as Buddha  Buddha means “the enlightened one”  Born a sheltered prince and became a penniless monk  Wandered in the search of the meaning of life and the cause of suffering  After wandering northeastern India for 6 years he experienced nirvana and discovered the four noble truths  Buddha teachings became known as the Dharma  Dharma means “law”  The founder of Buddhism was Siddhartha Gautama, born In the 500s or the 400’s B.C,

Core Beliefs  Right understanding of the causes of suffering  Right thoughts (kind and compassionate thinking)  Right speech (not lying or criticizing others)  Right action (harming no living thing and avoiding wrongful relationships and also drugs and alcohol)  Right livelihood (living honestly)  Right effort (using energy in the right way)  Right mindfulness (a person must be alert to what is going on inside and around him or her)  Right concentration (a person should meditate to calm the mind and concentrate on whatever he or she is doing)  The Buddha also taught as long as individuals remained with the cycle of rebirth, they will encounter suffering.  4 Noble Truths: Suffering is part of life, emotional attachments, ignorance, and selflessness are one of the causes of suffering. There is a state of transcendence of suffering, and there is a path that leads to that state.

Holidays Vesak/Visakah Puja: Vesak is the major Buddhist festival of the year as it celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha on the one day. Magha Puja Day This holy day is observed to commemorate an important event in the life of the Buddha. After the first Rains Retreat at the Deer Park at Sarnath, the Buddha went to Rajagaha city where 1250 Arahats,who were the Buddha's disciples returned from their wanderings to pay respect to the Buddha. They assembled in the Veruvana Monastery with the two chief disciples of the Buddha, Ven. Sariputta and Ven. Moggalana.
