Science 3G Ch 1b Where Living Things are Found Science Review Chapter 1b Flash Cards!

Science 3G Ch 1b A forest of trees that form seeds in a cones is a coniferous forest Coniferous forests grow where weather is very cold. Coniferous trees are evergreen, like Christmas trees and do not loose their needle-like leaves.

Science 3G Ch 1b A ____ is an area of land that contains very little rainfall. desert

Science 3G Ch 1b An area where the main plants are trees is called a _________ forest

Science 3G Ch 1b The type of forest growing in a hot rainy area is a _______ ____ forest tropical rain forest

Science 3G Ch 1b A pond is an ______ of living and nonliving things that affect one another. ecosystem

Science 3G Ch 1b All frogs living in a pond make up a __________ population

Science 3G Ch 1b Everything around a plant or an animal is its _________ environment

Science 3G Ch 1b The edge of a pond is a good ________ for cattails. habitat

Science 3G Ch 1b All the populations in an ecosystem form a _________ community

Science 3G Ch 1b A forest of tall trees growing where there is a lot of rain and the weather is NOT very cold or hot is a ______ forest coastal forest These forests are most like a tropical rain forest, except that it is usually found near the coast, where the weather is more mild.

Science 3G Ch 1b A forest of trees that loose and grow new leaves each year is a _______ forest deciduous forest These forests are found in the northeastern portion of the United States. Plants and animals which live there, must be able to survive hot summers and cold winters.

Science 3G Ch 1b More types of living things live in ___________ than anywhere else on Earth tropical rain forests

Science 3G Ch 1b Name the layers of a tropical rain forest canopy (top) under story (middle) forest floor (bottom)

Science 3G Ch 1b Which would probably not be found in a deciduous forest. Moss, cactus, shrubs, ferns Cactus Since the cactus stem stores lots of water, freeing temperatures will freeze and kill the entire plant.

Science 3G Ch 1b Oceans and seas contain ____ water. salt water Salt water surrounds the continents. Just for fun: By some estimates, if the salt in the ocean could be removed and spread evenly over the Earth’s land surface it would form a layer more than 500 feet (166 m) thick, about the height of a 40-story office building.

Science 3G Ch 1b Lakes, rivers, ponds and streams usually contain _____ water. fresh water Fresh water is found inland. Most fresh water comes from from rain and melted snow, which contains few minerals.

Science 3G Ch 1b Why are oceans salt water and lakes fresh water? Fresh water does have a very small amount of salt in it, but not enough to taste salty. Salt is a mineral found in rock. Rain and snow break down the rock and carries the salt down rivers and streams to lakes, ponds and oceans. Since oceans exist longer than lakes, they have gathered much more salt, over time.

Science 3G Ch 1b How much of the Earth’s surface is covered in water? 2/3

Science 3G Ch 1b What is the Earth’s largest ecosystem? Oceans Oceans cover most of the world.

Science 3G Ch 1b Can an ecosystem survive after a fire? Yes. Seeds that are protected underground can form new plants which can later provide habitats for returning animals.

Science 3G Ch 1b Why are conifers shaped like triangles and have needles instead of leaves? The triangle shape causes snow to slide down the tree. The needles are narrow so snow may fall through the tree.

Science 3G Ch 1b Why is it unusual to find a cactus growing in a coastal forest? Cactus prefer hot dry climates.

Science 3G Ch 1b What is the function of the spiny leaves of a cactus? to protect it from predators

Science 3G Ch 1b Why do cactus have long shallow roots? So they can take up the little bit of rain in a desert climate, that will not have a chance to soak deep into the ground.

Science 3G Ch 1b What is the function of the thick stem of a cactus? to store water
