What is it? Old Linking vs SFX Linking The OpenURL standard The SFX KnowledgeBase Consortial Models SFX Linking

A&I e-print Full Text Portal Citations Web Form eTOC SFX: open linking for libraries OPAC Link Server

SFX flow – A&I as link source SFX SourceSFX MenuSFX Target

SFX flow – OPAC as link source

SFX flow – E-journal reference as link source &volume=12&issue=3&spage=1&epage=8&date= 1998&aulast= Smith&aufirst=Paul

Developed by Ex Libris (Oren Beit-Arie) and Herbert Van de Sompel and submitted to NISO December 2000 Fast Track work item (target June 02 – v1.0) More Information on NISO Committee AX can be found at: OpenURL: towards NISO standardization “It’s so hot it even has its own theme song” Technically Speaking By David Dorman American Libraries January 2002

OpenURL (v0.1) already implemented by many Information Providers… and the numbers keep growing. SFX Sources (Open URL Enabled): - A&I databases - OPACs - E-journals - E-print archives (OAi) - DOI/CrossRef environment - Other local data repositories OpenURL: acceptance in the marketplace

E-journals OPACs ILL/DocDel Citation Databases A & I Databases Directories Encyclopedias Patent Databases Subject gateways Internet bookstores ….. Libraries choose! All targets must have a defined link-to or search syntax SFX Targets

definition of potential services information about the local collections rules supporting a decision on the relevance of services Managing an SFX Server

Comprehensive KnowledgeBase delivered with the SFX server Contains a set of rules for linking including rules for fine-tuning Library “localizes” to match local subscriptions and conditions using SFX tools Regularly updated and distributed by Ex Libris SFX KnowledgeBase

SFX Menu and Services under library control

Libraries of all types and sizes Libraries around the world – supports multiple languages and language scripts Single site installations and consortia Integration with local authentication systems - EZProxy and other Proxy servers Independent of other Ex Libris systems but fully integrated SFX in the library

Configuring SFX for consortia Servers Single Server single application Multiple server multiple applications Services System services e.g. backups Configuring the KnowledgeBase Resources Shared resources Institution-specific resources Levels of sharing between member institutions will define configuration options:

Consortium model I Inst AInst B Full independence for each institution Each member hosts its own application/server

License Considerations - model I: Pricing calculations: 1. Base fee for each site – determined by FTE; 2. Discount – sliding scale up to 30% max. 3. Annual Service Fees – 25% i. Software maintenance ii. KnowledgeBase Services Annual service fees based on non- discounted price

Consortium Model II: Shared server, multiple SFX instances – up to 1 per Institution Each institution can determine the types of SFX services and the format of the SFX Menu Centralized and local maintenance

License Considerations - model II: Pricing calculations: 1. One-time license fee for each site – determined by FTE (Note: special pricing for very small institutions) 2. Discount – sliding scale up to 32.5% max. 3. Annual Service Fees – 25% i. Software maintenance ii. KnowledgeBase Services Annual service fees based on discounted price

Consortium Model III: Shared server, 1 shared SFX instance (Recommended only if 90%+ resources shared) One shared SFX menu format Limited differentiation of services between institutions

License considerations – model III : Price calculations: 1.One-time license fee – determined by combined size (FTE) of participating institutions; 2.Annual Service Fees - 25% i.Software maintenance ii.KnowledgeBase Services One-time license fees and total annual service fees acknowledge shared server environment.
