Pd 1A: READING QUIZ!!!! Ch 23 S 1, 2, 3 When you are finished: A test / scantrons on LEFT B test / scantrons on RIGHT Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized?

Economy Game - Do not eat candy. If you eat the candy you are out for the rest of the period. Play Rock Paper Scissors. For each play, loser gives up a candy to the winner. When you have no more candy, stay where you are but stop playing. If you lose your partner, find another and continue play. Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized?

Discuss/take notes: How did you feel at the start of the game? How did you feel if you ran out of candy and hand to sit down? What tactics could you have used to get back in the game? Was the game fair? What could the teacher have done to make it fairer … and should I? Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized?

Analogy: Marx’s Theory of Capitalism Students start with their own candy Students play each other at game Results: a few win; most lose … and complaints about fairness? Private ownership of property/business Ability to compete freely Results: unequal economic classes … and workers’ revolt? Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized?

Economy Game Turn in ALL of your candy. How do you feel now? Was the action fair? As what/whom was the teacher acting? Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized?

Analogy: Marx’s Theory of Capitalism Teacher collected candy. Teacher distributed an equal amount of candy to each person. Result: students all have the same amount of candy. Government ownership of property/industry Goal is to bring economic equality. Result: classless society. Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized?

Who would like to play another round? Why? Why not?

Students don’t want to play anymore – effectively sharing the candy. Teacher doesn’t have to supervise; students have chosen the result. Classless society achieved – wealth is shared throughout society. No government is needed! The state “withers away.” Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized? Analogy: Marx’s Theory of Capitalism

In reality – someone always wants to play again! And then what happens? Marx said the communist revolution had to be worldwide. If no, capitalist countries would compete and undermine communist systems. Essential question: Why do we have economies? How are different economies organized? Analogy: Marx’s Theory of Capitalism
