In thinking about how you are going to approach The Awakening, we must discuss what it means to actively read. How do you annotate - or mark the text - when you read? What are characteristics of effective readers?

“ ‘You are burnt beyond recognition,’ he added, looking at his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage”(2). -Kate Chopin, The Awakening

“He thought it was very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, evinced so little interest in things which concerned him, and valued so little his conversation”(5). -Kate Chopin, The Awakening

“He reproached his wife with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children. If it was not a mother’s place to look after children, whose on earth was it?”(5) -Kate Chopin, The Awakening

 From the three quotes from The Awakening, what can we learn about the husband and wife, ala, what is their characterization?  Write down a response that can be supported by the text—the quotes we’ve discussed.
