Tailoring Services with Youth Working Together to Improve Policy and Practice in the Child Welfare System

Groups do not exist in isolation

Accelerated Adults What is not captured by the research? What is below the surface of their success?

Struggling Parents How can we lessen the pressure on young parents with resident children? How can we address feelings of failure/ responsibility for those with non-resident children?

Emerging Adults How can we create a safety net for these young people? How can we help them resolve issues that may impede their progress?

Troubled & Troubling How can we help these young people see their futures in a new way? How can we increase the focus on their strengths and foster their dreams, hopes, and aspirations?

Current Supports - Health insurance – Housing assistance – Tuition waiver, post-secondary educational support – Adventure challenge/therapy – Employment programs (Youth build, First Jobs Academy) – NC Reach – Opportunity Passport Program – Extended services past age 18

Needed Supports - Permanent connections/Social support - Community Connections - Respite for teen parents - Engage more fathers - Counseling for pregnant teenagers - Healthy relationships - Time/stress management - Encouragement/Positive Rewards - Dealing with the past, resolving issues with family - Foster interests and build strengths, instill hope for the future
