WRITING ABOUT A PERSON DESCRIPTIVE COMPOSITION

BEFORE WRITING Choose a person BRAINSTORMING You need three features/characteristics to explain why this person is important to you, so think about the things which make that person important.

FOR EXAMPLE; I’m going to write a short composition about my best friend Kıvanc. Here are the things which make him my best friend; Helpful, Extrovert, honest

TIME TO START WRITING!!!

INTRODUCTION To catch the reader’s interest, you should write HOOK as a first sentence For Instance; Life is so short that we need someone to share our thoughts and feelings.

BACKGROUN INFORMATION  After HOOK, you should give some specific information about the topic.  It must be connected with your HOOK  Write at least 2 sentences.  Include the answers of WHEN, WHERE, HOW, WHO.

FOR EXAMPLE; Sometimes we want to share our happiness and need a shoulder to cry on. I share everything about my life with my friend, Kıvanc. He has been my close friend for two years. I first met him on a school trip to Nevsehir. I asked him to take my photo, and we started talking. We've been friends ever since. Did you answer WHEN, WHERE, HOW, WHO?

THESIS STATEMENT After BACKGROUND INFORMATION, it is time to write your last sentence. You should state what the composition is about. YOU CAN WRITE IT IN TWO DIFFERENT WAYS; STATED or IMPLIED

FOR EXAMPLE; Being helpful, extravort, and honest are the things that make Kıvanc my best friend. STATED THESIS STATEMENT Kıvanc has some features that make him my best friend. IMPLIED THESIS STATEMENT

BODY PARAGRAPH The second paragraph of your short composition. You explain the features/characteristics of this person that make him important. Write the first feature in a topic sentence and explain it in details. Write the second feature in a topic sentence and explain it in details. Write the third feature in a topic sentence and explain it in details.

USE TRANSITIONS TO CONNECT FEATURES The first feature/characteristic of him/her is…(noun/noun phrase) The first feature/characteristic of him/her is that…(sentence) First, … First of all, The second(another) feature/characteristic is… The second feature/characteristic of him/her is that…(sentence) Second (Secondly), ….. The third/ final / last feature/characteristic of him is…(noun/noun phrase) The third/ final / last feature/characteristic of him is that…(sentence) Third (Thirdly), … Moreover, / Furthermore, / In addition, / Also, … Finally, / Lastly, …

FOR EXAMPLE; The first feature of Kıvanc is that he likes to help people(topic sentence). I know that whenever I am in trouble, he is by my side. He shares everything he has with me and the other people. He also work in the charity to help poor students. Sometimes you can see homeless people in his house because he feels sorry for them and let them to come to his house. In addition to being helpful, Kıvanc is very outgoing (topic sentence). He is always friendly and loves to have fun. He's got a fantastic sense of humour, and he always makes me laugh. However, he can be a bit immature at times. For example, when he doesn't get what he wants, he acts childishly and stamps his feet. The most important feature of him is being honest. He never tell lies. Furthermore, he hates people who don’t tell the truth. He does his homework himself and he never cheats because he thinks that cheating means being dishonest.

CONCLUSION THE LAST PARAGRAPH OF YOUR COMPOSION

CONCLUSION  Signaling(transition) word In conclusion, … In Summary, … To sum up, … To conclude, … In short, … In brief, …  Restatement  Summary  CLOSURE (Advice/Prediction/Suggestion/Opinion (last sentence))

FOR EXAMPLE; All in all, I'm glad to have Kıvanc as my friend. It's a pleasure to be with him, and I really enjoy his company. He has thought me lost of things. I'm sure we'll always be close friends.
