The Central School of Speech and Drama combines the traditions of the conservatoire with the cutting edge innovation and enquiry of the best university drama departments.

ABOUT CENTRAL Elsie Fogerty founded The Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art at the Royal Albert Hall in Fogerty was a specialist in speech training and held a firm belief in the social importance of education and was committed to advancing the study of theatre as an academic discipline. In 1956 the School moved from the Albert Hall, having acquired the lease of the Embassy Theatre at Swiss Cottage and its associated buildings. By 1961 three distinct departments had been established within Central. The Stage department was running its three-year course for actors, with alumni as distinguished as Lord Olivier and Dame Peggy Ashcroft already a part of its history, and a two-year course for stage managers.

Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre In 2005 the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) created 72 national Centres of Excellence. The Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre (CETT) is the only cross-institutional Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), and its work recognises and rewards the talent and commitment of the teaching staff of the School, and the exceptional qualities of those who study here. The Central School of Speech and Drama was awarded the CETL funding by HEFCE in recognition of its status as one of the leading higher education institutions in the UK delivering theatre training. The CETT was created by Central to sustain the School's position and to reward the excellence of its teaching staff and students. CETT's objectives are to provide a national resource for vocational performing arts training and learning, a focus for theatre research and scholarship, and a site for collaboration, nationally and internationally, between industry, higher education and specialist training providers.

There are three main strands of activity that CETT delivers: Learning Models information about Curriculum Projects, Inter-Institutional Collaborations and Issues in Theatre Training projects. Industry Interface strong collaborative links with a variety of industry leaders. Dissemination information on past conferences, symposiums, publications, presentations and lectures. The CETT works with all members of the School's community to: curate events, conferences, symposia, industry-HE forums and workshops. host talks, distinguished practitioner-residents, visiting fellows and guest speakers. develop Creative Apprenticeships and professional development programmes to help students to enter employment in the theatre industries after their time with us at Central.

International Students Currently students from over 45 different countries choose to study at Central. You will join a thriving student body and add to a cultural diversity that inspires the creative courses taught at the School. Based in the heart of London, Central not only offers you the chance to follow a range of internationally respected courses, but also to train in the city that contains some of Britain's most famous theatres: the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Globe, and the theatres of the West End. Studying at Central also offers the opportunity to build an international group of contacts amongst fellow students that you can draw on in your professional career after graduation. Central welcomes international students and will make every effort to integrate you into the life of the School, as well as providing you with information and guidance about studying and living in London.

Facilities The Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London moved from the Royal Albert Hall to the Embassy Theatre in The theatre and accompanying original buildings still remain at the heart of the campus, and are surrounded by purpose-built training spaces. The sheer scale and range of facilities at Central, and the professional level of equipment, mean that our students are studying at the best-equipped drama school in the UK. As its planned programme of development progresses, the School's accommodation is being upgraded all the time in order to provide a high-quality working environment for students and staff. During the 1990s the School embarked on an exciting and innovative building programme that now provides wonderful facilities for students. The building programme has already seen the completion of four of its five phases. Phase one gave us a superb workshop facility in In the summer of 1993, phase two created: the Embassy Theatre extension a new wing which houses a fine studio theatre as well as a lecture theatre design studios wardrobe facilities
