A Capital Rotary Centenary Project A New Initiative The Karori Wildlife Sanctuary “Rotary Discovery Area” A partnership among a number of Wellington Clubs sponsored by Karori Rotary

The Concept For Rotary and the Sanctuary to develop a family activity area within the Sanctuary with strong educational and conservation values. The proposed site is the old Dam construction HQ. There are artifacts and remnants of the construction site and great views over the Sanctuary and City. The area will be a high profile attraction in the Sanctuary. Rotary input will be strongly branded.

Plan of Discovery Area

The Discovery Area Plan to develop a family picnic area, walkways and activities to: encourage kids to uncover the history of the site and provide information in their language to uncover artifacts on the site such as bogey wheels and hut foundations to rebuild some features - eg, a worker's hut and cableway/lookout tower to introduce new discovery elements eg, footprints of birds from the area

Perspective of Discovery Area

3 Stage Plan Estimated cost $100,000 -$150,000 over 3 years 1. Construct easy loop Walking Track to (with sleepers) and from the Discovery area; build tracks through the Discovery area; set tables and seats in place 2. Replanting native plants and vegetation and reconstruct a railway wagon as used during dam building and build a workers hut; put in place interpretation panels 3. Design and build a cableway/lookout tower

What’s it got Going for It? An inspirational project that can involve Rotarians and partners – fund raising and/or hands and/or researching historical records to aid interpretation A project with a 500 year life – A project of substance A permanent symbol of Rotary’s involvement in the community

How Rotarians Can Join In!!! Contacts with business’s who can be encouraged to –Join the Sanctuary "Business Goes Bush Club " – will result in some contribution going to the project –donate materials eg sleepers, material for restoring the workers hut and the lookout tower Buy a $200 sleeper and have your own, family or Club plaque attached Come and join us for a day of tree planting or bush clearing Join in our Spring fund raising picnic in the Sanctuary Help organise or participate in other fund raising events eg race around the 8.5 km Sanctuary fence Become a Club partner and register this as a Centenary project
