Existentialism Synthesis Essay Writing an Intro

Purpose? What is your purpose in this intro? 1. Clearly express your POV 2. Establish: ethos, voice, tone, mood 3. Convince your audience to continue reading

Good or bad…? Often in life there are things that cannot be explained. Bad things can happen to good people and good things can happen to bad people. It happens all the time. This sometimes will make people feel uncomfortable and search for answers or question how they view the world. This search for answers will be based upon how someone views the world. Too often people have a way of viewing the world that does not give them the answers they are looking for. A good worldview should provide answers to life’s difficult questions and allow the person to understand why things happen the way they do. As a worldview Existentialism is intellectually lazy, espousing the defeatist belief that life's difficult questions are unanswerable rather than inspiring its adherents to struggle to make sense of a mysterious world.

Good or bad…? I read an item in the newspaper earlier this week about a young couple killed in a hit and run car accident while driving to the hospital to have their first baby. The new baby was successfully delivered before the mother passed away and was put in the neonatal intensive care unit. That baby died this morning. Doing a quick Google search for “why bad things happen to good people” looking to find some way to make sense of this, I came across an existentialist blog that said glibly, “bad things happen to good people because bad things happen to good people” (Lowe). This isn’t enough for me; Existentialsim isn’t enough for me. I find Existentialism as a worldview to be intellectually lazy, espousing the defeatist belief that life's difficult questions are unanswerable rather than inspiring its adherents to struggle to make sense of a mysterious and sometimes troubling world.

What made the bad one bad? 1. Boring 2. Exam response 3. Vague and general 4. Very abstract abstract: (adj) thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual instances abstract: (adj) thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual instances (from dictionary.com)

What made the good one good? 1. Draws reader in 2. Deals in the concrete 3. Leads audience from concrete experience to POV. concrete: (adj) pertaining to or concerned with realities or actual instances rather than abstractions; particular (from dictionary.com)
