The gift commemorated the Centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Did you know the statue was actually built on an old fort? Fort Wood was used during the War of The statue arrived in New York Harbor in June of 1885 and was dedicated on October 28, 1886, ten years late for the centennial of our Independence. The tablet in the statue’s left hands reads July 4 th, 1776 (in Roman numerals). The 25 windows in the crown symbolize gemstones found on the earth and the heaven’s rays shining over the world.
