Marxist Approach By : Pat, Mary Grace, Jeremy, and Laura

Marxist criticism A type of criticism in which literary works are viewed as the product of work and whose practitioners emphasize the role of class and ideology, as they reflect, propagate, and even challenge the prevailing social order Criticism where works are thought of as a result from classes in society

Marx Marxist approach comes from the writings of Karl Marx, a 19 th century German philosopher. He wrote the communist manifesto which said that the proletariat should overthrow their leaders and make a state without class or money We would use this point of view because it shows the authors opinion of other people and how things should be This approach uses questions like: Are there any classes? Do the classes get along?

Advantages One advantage is it shows what the author thinks of his fellow human Another advantage is it shows how the people in the poem live and how it could be better

Disadvantages One disadvantage is it does not provide background knowledge or thorough knowledge of the author Another disadvantage is it assumes that lower classes are mad about being lower class and hate upper classes, when some like the position they are in even if it’s a lower class

Identity Card Mahmoud Darwish was an Arab that got his land stolen by the Israelis. His father and grandfather were both farmers who worked on the land so it angered him even more that the Israelis came to occupy their land. Then he was exiled into Lebanon where he wrote poems. "My father... descends from the family of the plow, not from a privileged class" (Darwish). "And my grandfather...was a farmer. Neither well-bred, nor well- born!" (Darwish). "You have stolen the orchards of my ancestors" (Darwish). "Beware...Of my hunger and my anger!" (Darwish).
