Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview Migration Overview Timeline Training/Support Challenges What we did well

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview: Timeline Timeline Spring 2003 Investigation began Two UGA Library Trainers identified for a “Train the Trainers” approach First issue: Browser or Client? –Browser workflow problems »Diacritics had to be entered as "bar syntax“ »Slow response time –Postponed migration until Client available

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview: Timeline Training Timeline Training begins… Spring 2004 Two training workshops planned Cataloging Supervisors test Connexion Client, review training documentation, and give feedback to trainers –Phase I: Introduction to Connexion, online tutorial, resources, supporting documentation, help –Phase II: Searching, editing, save file, workforms

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview: Timeline Training/Support Spring 2004 Windows upgrades for Cataloging workstations begin (Libraries Systems Dept.) –Question: Authority level in Windows XP? Power User Training begins for Cataloging Department by trainers –Departmental Supervisors (Section Heads) –Cataloging staff

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview: Timeline Open Training August 2004 Open Training begins for Library staff in the Libraries (Acquisitions, Collection Development, etc.) –Question/Issue: Identifying all staff who need training. –Announcements posted via Library listserv –Makeup sessions announced

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview: Challenges Challenges Identifying all Library users of OCLC Passport/Prism Users are not centralized in one building Windows upgrades needed Computers were running on a variety of software and OS configurations, including Windows 95, 98, and All workstations were upgraded to XP. Libraries’ Systems Dept. is responsible for all upgrades and software installation vs. individual with authorization to install and upgrade workstation

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview: Additional challenges Additional Challenges Macro Express global key assignments conflicted with some of the Connexion Client assignments Design problems with Connexion Client 1.0 Frequently unstable during testing No expanded index in the authority file Settings in Connexion are tied to user AND the particular workstation, not just the workstation or user

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Migration Overview: What we did well What we did well… A train the trainer module works well, especially with a large staff Don’t try to teach/learn everything in one sitting The trainers taught what they knew, acknowledging that some learning would happen on the job. The client is very complex and is designed to handle many complex searching and editing strategies, for many formats, in many publication patterns…

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Searching Searching overview Searching tips Phrase searching Copy & paste Pinned! What is pinning and how does it work?

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Searching tips Searching tips Command line searching derived searches are the same browse query words, phrases, or title phrases –word: individual words in a phrase »ti:organic gardening is a keyword search, not a phrase search »ti:“organic gardening” searches as a phrase

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : More Searching tips Browse query continued title search uses equals sign instead of colon –does not search across subfields »sca ti= search will only search $a title phrase search also uses equals sign –searches across subfields –most specific results »pnw=james, henry

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : More Searching tips Searching tips continued Keyword search use ? or # for wildcards, * for truncation –su:wom?n and history and new york/1990- –ti:librar* and su:fiction/2005 proximity searches use w or n (within 25 words) –ti:aluminum w2 wiring boolean searching –su:civil and war not battle/1970

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Pinned! Pinned!

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Pinned! Pinned! What is pinning and how does it work? Any record can be pinned by going to View>Pinned (or Shift + F4) –records can be toggled from pinned to unpinned Benefits of pinning records –have multiple records open at once

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Holdings/LDRs Holdings/LDRs Connexion browser between Sept. and Dec day downtime when OCLC converts Passport will be available for LDRs until LDR functionality comes up

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : To control or not to control? To control or not to control? UGA does not control headings in Connexion. Why not? It seems to be designed to help OCLC’s authority control, not that of its members It doesn’t fit well into our workflow

Connecting with Connexion: The UGA Experience : Q&A Q&A How many of you have migrated to Connexion? Browser or Client?
