Session A Change Initiatives: Leading Change From the Board Room to the Classroom Facilitators: Dr. Walt Buster and Dr. Ginny Boris, Central Valley Educational Leadership Institute, CSUF.

"Change is hard because people overestimate the value of what they have—and underestimate the value of what they may gain by giving that up.“ — James Belasco and Ralph Stayer Flight of the Buffalo (1994)

Fullan guides leaders to boil down the essence of change into the smallest number of key, high yield factors that have high impact on student and teacher engagement and learning.

Leaders should strive to: a) increase the speed of quality change b) to achieve large-scale or whole system reform.

Our Panel Dr. Francisco Escobedo, Superintendent Dr. John M. Nelson III, Assistant Superintendent Alex Cortes, Principal Chula Vista Elementary School District

Fullan advises leaders to find different ways for implementers to learn from other implementers, especially from others who are engaged in similar circumstances but are further down the line. Draw on the Wisdom of the Crowd

Fullan advises leaders to leverage small, early successes to generate and grow pride throughout the organization. Be A Change Knowledgeable Leader

Risk taking is embedded in the psyche of successful organizations. Take Risks and Learn

Many of the potentially best leaders are reticent to assert themselves. Sometimes the status quo needs a wake up call. You can’t wait for success, you have to “kick-start” success. Kick Start Success

Change savvy leaders know a great deal because they are learners. Change Savvy Leaders

Six Secrets of Change

Shared Goals Shared Knowledge Mutual Respect Timely Communication Problem-Solving Communication Build Successful Relationships

Love, Trust and Resistance Start with love Behave your way into trust Earn trust through demonstrated integrity and competence

Turning People Around You can’t make people change but if you are change savvy, your actions will reduce, if not eliminate resistance

Motivational Work Meaningful, accomplishable work… Enables development Creates a sense of camaraderie Creates the belief that the organization is being well led

If not us, than who? "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has." — Margaret Mead
