Garcia invited Scott Eccles to spend a few days at his house, Wisteria House. During dinner, Garcia seemed distracted At the end of the evening, a servant brought Garcia a note. At nearly one o’clock, Garcia went to Scott’s room to check if he had rung the bell. When Scott woke up the next day at 9 am, the house was completly empty. Scott Eccles packed his things and left the house.

The police officers had found the note Garcia had received the night before. The note was on a woman’s handwriting. Garcia was found dead on a field a mile from his house. Holmes thinks that the servants were involved in the crime. Holmes suspects that Garcia wanted Scott Eccles to witness his presence at home at one o´clock After examining Garcia’s note, Holmes decided to investigate the owners of all the great houses near Wisteria House.

Holmes and the police officers arrive at Wisteria House, which had been visited by “the devil”. They also found feathers and a bucket full of blood. While investigating the kitchen, they found a black, leathery, dried up object shaped like a baby or small monkey. He was actually Garcia’s cook. Holmes spent the next few days asking questions around the village.

Henderson has two young daughters who were taught by Miss Burnet. Henderson lives a very secluded life and is always in the company of his secretary.

Servants say that Henderson is a very violent man. Holmes and Watson went to see this lady, who had been drugged by Opium. Holmes comes to the conclusion that the letter had been written by Miss Burnet, the teacher. Later that day, a police officer came to tell Holmes that everyone had left the house, including the lady. The woman had escaped from her master a moment before his train left. She was then taken to Holmes.

The Village police officer, Baynes, told Holmes that he had only arrested the cook to make Henderson feel he was safe. It is discovred that Garcia died in an attempt to kill Juan Murillo. Baynes explained that Henderson was actually Juan Murillo, an evil Central American ruler. Murillo escaped from his country carrying many valuables. Miss Burnet reveals that her real name is Mrs. Victor Durando. Juna Murillo shot Victor Durando and took his property.

Mrs. Victor Durando reveals that the secretary, Lucas, real name is Lopez. Murillo killed Garcia and Lopez stood watch over Mrs. Durando. Lopez and Murillo became suspicious of Mrs. Durando and caught her, thinking of killing her. In the end, they decided to send her letter to Garcia.

Six months later, Lord Montalva and his secretay, Mr. Rulli were murdered in madrid. Mr. Baynes showed the news to Holmes, which clearly showed that the two murdered men were in fact Murillo and Lopez.
