They were provided with a study base, computer, video camera, appropriate software, some suggested research sites and a week to complete the task. During this time they did not follow the normal National Curriculum timetable and so permission had to be obtained from parents.

Pedagogical Value Four pupils were given the task of researching, scripting, filming and editing a news programme about an energy issue. They decided to feature ‘Wind Farms’ as there are some in the local area and more are planned. In producing their programme they developed their key skills in the following ways: - Communication – they had to write and present their ideas in a format suitable for a news programme. Numeracy - They created graphs it show their findings. IT – They used a number of software programs in order to create their programme, in particular ‘Moviemaker’ a program with which they were unfamiliar. They also used a video camera to film the programme. Working with others – The joint task required them to allocate tasks and negotiate. Problem Solving – They had no teacher assistance and had to plan the task and decide how to complete it. Improving Own Learning – They learned new IT skills and also developed knowledge and understanding of renewable energy sources and especially windfarms. Return to homepage

‘I really enjoyed doing the project. It was very informative and I know far more about global warming after doing the project. I took the role of researcher and through this developed my knowledge of energy. I also learnt how to edit a film’ Naomi Watkins ‘Being off timetable and working with the team was interesting, we took on different roles. My role was developing the language in the script. We learnt new skills and developed the skills we already had’ Hollie Mediana ‘I made the Power Point using pictures of different energy sources, renewable and non-renewable’ Amy Farmer ‘I edited the final result, adding music and effects to the film’ Leah Williams Return to homepage Pupil Quotes

Outcome of the project and impact on practice The pupils developed their learning about energy. The ‘Here is the News’ programme came second in an All Wales ‘Climate Change Competition and won a cash prize of £500. There was media coverage in the local and regional newspapers. As a result of the news report the students and staff involved have developed their IT skills and ability to present using IT. This news report will be used as an example for future projects of a similar nature in Geography, Science and IT. Return to homepage
