Science and the Bible A Course of Study by Dr. David C. Bossard Winter, 2008 (Continued) Week 17 Genesis 1, Day 6 Creation of Man (Cont.)

Genesis 1:26-27, Day Six, Part 2: Creation of Humans 26 Then God said, “Let us make (asah) man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created (bara) man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Gen. 2:7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

Genesis 1:26-27, Day Six, Part 2: Use of "bara" and "asah" together Genesis 2:4 4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Isaiah 45:18 18 For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): "I am the Lord, and there is no other"

Genesis 1:26-27, Day Six, Part 2: Use of "bara" and "asah" together "God formed (asah) man from the dust of the ground, then gave man His spirit as the initiator of life. Since the Bible uses both "created" and "made" (bara and asah) in reference to the origin of Man, we can safely assume that God used both providential and supernatural means to bring man to life. The "dust of the ground" clearly infers that the physical components of men come from the elements of the earth, as we now know from scientific observation. The Bible also clearly states that man is not merely physical, that he also has a spiritual component." Marilyn J. Agee "The Origin of

Genesis 1:26-27, Day Six, Part 2: Creation of Humans 26 Then God said, “Let us make (asah) man in our image, after our likeness. Genesis 1:26-27, Day Six, Part 2: Creation of Humans Seduced by Science? "American religion has fallen into a trap … Instead of speaking of human values, goals and Limits, it speaks the language of science. "Religious leaders claim, for example, that the Science of genetics teaches us about our nature Because genes are the essence of our being." page 1 "By treating genes as the core of our humanity, religious leaders had joined modern scientists and philosophers in rejecting any spiritual account of our nature. … [in the debate over human cloning] some clergy repeated the mistake of treating people as nothing more than their genes." page 9
