Problem : Disorganized Paragraphs I thought I knew where I was going with this…

Solution: Back to Basics Unity: One paragraph, one idea; new idea, new paragraph Organization: Build your paragraph to support your topic sentence. Coherence: Go for the flow. Listen to your language. Use transitions.

Problem: I still don’t get the whole thesis statement thing

Key Features Main Idea in a Complete Sentence The sport of cross-country running. Why do I want to be a teacher? This is not a complete sentence. The sport of cross-country running has allowed me to get in better shape, eat healthy, and meet some interesting people. Being a teacher is a great profession, because it allows me to work with students, other professionals, and be creative. This is a question, not a statement. Thesis Statement

Remember: If you write a good thesis statement, you make writing a good paper a lot easier.

Solution- Check that your thesis: Is a complete sentence Is a complete sentence Powerfully states your main point or claim Powerfully states your main point or claim Communicates both the limited subject and your attitude Serves as a roadmap that provides the structure for a focused paper Serves as a roadmap that provides the structure for a focused paper Thesis mine!

Problem: I still have issues with citing sources

Solution: Use the MSWord References Tab Citations and Bibliography pane makes it easy to select style and cite sources correctly! References Main Body Abstract General Format Title page Your essay should include four major sections: An abstract page and list of references are titled as Abstract and Reference, respectively.

Title Page Page header: (use Insert Page Header) title flush left + page number flush right. Title: (in the upper half of the page, centered) name (no title or degree) + affiliation (university, etc.)

Abstract Page Page header: do NOT include “Running head:” Abstract: centered, at the top of the page Write a 150- to 250- word summary of your paper in an accurate, concise, and specific manner.

Independent and Dependent Clauses All sentences have a simple subject, verb and object(ive)=SVO Ex: Tanya ran to the store. (Subject)(verb) (object) Tanya’s objective was to run to the store. SVO structure is also called an Independent Clause, so what is a dependent clause?

How to Correct Run-Ons and Comma Splices Method 1- Use a period and a capital letter. Run-on: The computer hummed loudly the sound was annoying. Comma Splice: The computer hummed loudly, the sound was annoying. Correct.- The computer hummed loudly. The sound was annoying.

Method 2- Use a comma and a joining word (FANBOYS- For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So) Hint: the comma comes BEFORE the FANBOYS, and can be called coordinating conjunctions or joining words) Run-on: Dolphins have killed sharks they never attack humans. Comma splice: Dolphins have killed sharks, they never attack humans. Correct- Dolphins have killed sharks, but they never attack humans.

The Comma, The 4 Main Uses 1. To separate three or more items in a series., Example: The school cafeteria has learned not to serve broccoli, spinach, or Brussels sprouts. Our tasks for the party are blowing up balloons, setting the table, and planning music 2. To separate introductory material from the rest of the sentence. Example: After taking a hot shower, Vince fell asleep on the sofa. When covered with chocolate syrup, frozen yogurt is not a diet food. 3. To join two complete thoughts connected by FANBOYS. Example: Lee broke her leg in the accident, and her car was badly damaged. 4. Using two commas to set apart extra information in the middle of a sentence (parenthetical phrases/ appositives) Example: Mike, who lives in Michigan, loves the Tigers.
