What is Project Eliminate? Kiwanis International joined Project Eliminate in Project Eliminate will end in the summer of The objective of this global project is to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) from the face of the Earth. Kiwanis International, along with Key Club, has partnered with UNICEF to eliminate MNT. Over 100 million mothers will be immunized by the end of this project.
What is MNT? MNT stands for maternal and neonatal tetanus, which is a horrendous disease that has taken the lives of many infants and mothers. In 2010, it killed 58,000 newborns. MNT is caused because of insufficient immunization services, the absence of clean delivery services, and improper care of a mother while giving birth. Once a mother or child contracts the disease, the fatality rate can be as high as 100%. With proper hospital care, the fatality rate is between 10% and 60%.
How Do We Eliminate? Elimination of MNT starts with you! A small donation of $1.80 saves one mother and all of her future children. This money will cover the cost of 3 different vaccine doses that trained vaccinators will give to women of childbearing age. It will take over $110 million to complete Project Eliminate and to pay for vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, skilled staff, and more. Other ways that MNT can be eliminate are clean birth practices and proper cord care.
Just the Facts One baby dies every 9 minutes from neonatal tetanus. 160 babies die each day from neonatal tetanus. Kiwanis International’s goal is to raise $110 million to eliminate MNT. Babies born to vaccinated mothers are immune for the first 2 months of life. By the end of this project, 61 million mothers and their babies will be protected.
