National Youth Administration Melissa Brimigion

When was it Created? The National Youth Administration was created in June of 1935 as a division of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). http://memory.loc.gov/pnp/cph/3b40000/3b48000/3b48800/3b48888r.jpg

What was its Purpose? The NYA was designed to specifically target the unemployment of the youth of the Great Depression. http://newdeal.feri.org/ELEANOR/images/nya1.jpg

Who Participated in the NYA? Elenore Roosevelt pushed her husbend, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to sign it into effect. Elenore participated alot in the NYA, and even took credit for it’s creation in her autobiography. Mary McLeod Bethune lead the part of the NYA that specifically targeted the African American youth. http://www.all-inspirational.com/image-files/eleanor-roosevelt-inspirational-quotes.jpg http://www.blackpast.org/files/blackpast_images/Bethune_Mary_McLeod_final.jpg

Creations or Projects? The NYA gave grants to high school and College students in exchange for work. This kept the unemployment rate from getting bigger and students could still study. The NYA also gave financial aid and on-the-job training to unemployed kids who were not in school. They also launched a special program in 1934 that provided the same assistance but focused specifically on the African American youth. http://wpcontent.answers.com/wikipedia/commons/4/42/NYA_typing_class.gif

Effectiveness? The NYA was very effective in their goals, despite the criticism from politicians. The Student Work program eventually helped 2.1 million students find jobs, costing the government only $75 a student (annually). The Out-of-School Program aided 2.6 million people in all, costing the government $225 (annually) per worker In an average year the NYA employed approx. 500,000 people (about 150,000 students and the rest from the community) at a total cost of about $58 million. “The NYA was remarkable for it’s absence of political overtones.”(1) http://russellgorton.com/images/autorepair.jpg

Is it still in use? It was a minimal investment, but it was still unpopular with the “congressional conservatives”. The NYA was abolished in 1943 because Congress refused to continue funding , despite its success. http://www.kosherquest.org/assets/images/Congress_Building.jpg
