Leaders…  Are teachers and coaches  Act in the best wishes of the led  Need to be concerned with the present.  Need to be focused on the future. (Betof, 2007; Burke, 2001; Forsyth, 2006; Swanson, 2001)

Generalizations about Entrepreneurial Leadership  Entrepreneurs reject formal structure and prefer to remain control of most tasks.  Although rapid change is part of the nature of a new organization, entrepreneurs are often resistant to change.  Entrepreneurs are forced to change as their organization grows. Entrepreneurial Organizational Model (Julien, 1998)

Leadership must… support its organization’s HR practices. (Christensen, 2006)

How can leadership get involved in HRD?  Valuable HRD program outcomes are aligned with specific organizational and performance requirements.  Leadership must assess the current business environment, where the organization is going and how it is going to get there. (Christensen, 2006; Swanson, 2001)

HRD Leaders “The most important HRD skill is to be able to work with decision makers to discover genuine organizational performance requirements and to convince them that they want what they need” (Swanson, 2001, pg. 18)

A Close Look At Your Organization Leaders Need to Assess their Environment:  Who are your customers and what are their needs?  Who are your competitors?  Is there impending government regulation that will effect your business?  What direction is the economy headed in?  Are there any cultural forces that may influence your business? How is your business going to win in this environment?

Performance Relationship Map How my employees and leadership performing today. Cause GAP How my business is operating today. How my employees and leadership should be performing Environmental Impact on Your Business Modeled after Robinson and Robinson’s Performance Relationship Map GAP How my small business should be operating. (Robinson & Robinson, 1995)

To simplify… Considering of all the environmental changes surrounding your organization, what do you want your organization to become and how are you going to get there?

5 Processes of HRD How will these processes help your organization reach fulfill its business strategy?  Workforce planning  Learning and development (training & mentoring)*  Organizational development (leadership-what we’re doing right now)*  Performance management  Employee relations (mentoring)* *We’re going to focus on these in this course. (Christensen, 2006)

Your task…  Use the resources in this lesson to help your organization’s leaders get to know your organization and its environment.  Work with your organization’s leaders to fill out your performance relationship map and discover the gaps that may exist in your organization (unless your business is perfect of course!)
