What are Waves? Pages A rhythmic disturbance that carries energy but not matter. 2. A type of wave that can travel only through matter. 3. Material through which a wave travels. This can be a solid, liquid, or a gas. 4. Energy is transferred from particle to particle in the medium. 5.Transverse waves and compressional waves; compressional waves are sometimes called longitudinal waves.

6.A transverse wave moves causing the matter in the medium to move up and down or back and forth at right angles to the direction the wave travels. 7.The high points in a transverse wave are called crests and the low points are called troughs. 8. Matter in the medium moves forward and backward along the same direction that the wave travels. 9. A sound wave is an example of a compressional wave.

12. Electromagnetic waves can travel in matter or in space. 13. The energy carried by electromagnetic waves is called radiant energy. 11. Waves that can travel through matter or empty space (a vacuum). 10.In a compressional wave, particles are squeezed together in compressions and are farther apart in rarefactions.
