Relative clauses N/NP 를 수식하는 종속절 부수적인 정보를 준다. 선행사 바로 뒤에 위치한다. 관계대명사나 관계부사에 의해 나타난다.

Relative clauses A girl is talking to Tom. Do you know the girl? Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom?

Relative pronoun who(S): people The woman who called you is here. which(S/O): animals / things / whole sentences Man has some gifts which no animal has. whose(S/O): people / animals / things Do you know the boy whose mother is a nurse?

Relative pronoun whom(O): people I was invited by the professor whom I met at the conference. that(S/O): people / animals / things I don’t like the table that stands in the kitchen.

Relative adverb (=preposition + which) when (=on/in which): TIME I remember the day when I first met her. where (=at/in which): PLACE The place where I saw him was SanFrancisco. why (=for which): REASON He does not tell me the reason why he was absent.

Restrictive ( 한정적 용법 ) 수식하는 명사를 한정한다 or 정의한다. comma 가 올 수 없다. that 을 사용할 수 있다. He met a friend who plays Starcraft well. The computer is a useful tool which can process a lot of data.

Non-relative( 계속적 용법 ) 보충설명을 한다. comma 를 사용한다. that 을 사용할 수 없다. 주로 사람 이름이나 지명, 국가이름, 회사명이 선 행사일 때 쓰인다. Michael Blair, who established a printing company in Glasgow, is taking a trip in Seoul.

He has three sons who are teachers. (restrictive) 그는 선생님인 아들 3 명이 있다. He has three sons, who are teachers. (non-restrictive) 그는 아들 3 명이 있는데, 그들은 선생님이다.
