Matt Warner Music 1010 online fall 2014

 Many types of rock from classic rock to punk, to heavy metal.  Each has its own sound  Bayside is considered a form of punk rock

 Smoking Popes  New Found Glory

 Starting in 2000 Bayside was founded by, and still includes Lead Singer Anthony Raneri  Mike Kozak (guitar),Chris Jackson (bass), and Vinny Daraio (drums) were the other founding members  The band name was an improvisation that stuck

 Signed in 2001 released 2 albums with this label  Long Stories Short (2001)  Split EP Bayside/ Name Taken (2002)

 Changed Labels in 2003  First Full Length album Sirens and Condolences (2004)  Bayside (2005)

While touring in the western united states, the band’s van hit black ice and killed then drummer John “beatz” Holohan

 Although tragic, this served as a catalyst for the bands success.  Band released their acoustic album in 2006 featuring “Winter” in honor of Holohan.  RmCI RmCI

 2007 Walking Wounded was released  2008 Shudder was released

 The band finally switched labels again to release Killing Time in 2011  The band released its latest album, Cult, in 2014

 Winter  Transitive Property  Its Not a Bad Little War

 Written in memory of John Holohan  No electric version of this song  Rarely performed by the band  Acoustic album (2006)

 Very personal song for songwriter Anthony Raneri  One of the more popular songs from the Cult album (2014)

 One of the bands few songs that doesn’t have a major story or experience tied to it  Not well known to many though it  On the Killing Time album (2011)

 General emotion is optimistic with some sadness  Verses are split into 2 sections i.e. 1 st verse starts 0:17 and changes up at 0:45  Added vocal emphasis with each new chorus  Use of repetition at various parts adds emotion

 At the beginning, the vocals are prominent and the rest of the band is playing quietly  Slight crescendo at 0:42 sets up chorus  The song is one large crescendo with more energy after each chorus  2:51 guitar solo gives the song some contrast

 Much faster tempo than the previous 2 songs  The band uses different speeds to give the song an added texture.  Back up vocals are used to emphasize different parts of the song.  2:25 the bridge is different to add something different to the song, but not so much to distract.
