Presentation transcript:

The “event message” for the moneychangers and the message to today’s disciples, the church, is the same……

John 2:13-22 (esp.13-17)  EXODUS 12 - The remembrance of a Passover  Summary  Verse 11 emphasis  “take of passover in haste” (prioritize)  Verse 12 emphasis – judgments of God  He is Lord now

John 2:13-17  JESUS WENT WHERE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO GO(verse 13) - His need to worship - His obedience - His example  A PLACE PURPOSED AS HOUSE OF WORSHIP CAN HOUSE WRONG MOTIVES - verse 14

What are the wrong motives?  Please people (different from example)  Advance  Feel better - can be a benefit; not a motive  “Cover the bases” - “after all, I’m not opposed to it”

Jesus thought motives matter  VERSE 15  “Scourge of cords”  “Drove out”  “Overturned tables”  Why? Verse 16 – somebody else owns that house!

The Owner Has Guidelines  “God’s house”  Ephesians 2:19-22  2 Corinthians 6:16-20  “Be holy, as I am holy”  You are God’s temple!  God’s building coming into a building had and still has a purpose (so…motives matter)

“His disciples remembered…”  VERSE 17  “Zeal for your house will consume me” (from Psalm 69:9)  I WANT ZEAL FOR BOTH OF HIS HOUSES TO CONSUME ME!  God, through the Christ, has always desired zeal…..and taken it into account

The Appeal Of Zeal…  To the “Ho-Hum” of today’s church….consider these thoughts  Out of abundance of heart the mouth speaks (Meaning?)  Parable of talents ( see the parallel?)  Serve only ONE God (priorities of zeal?) Matthew 4:7, 10

Songs of Prescription  For cleansing the temple (ours, personal) and for our zeal: - O To Be Like Thee - Have Thine Own Way - Purer In Heart - Jesus, Hold My Hand  Our prayer….Lord, make me so that you would never need to drive me from your house!
