255 Medical Detachment (FWD) Mosquito Surveillance Plan VECTOR BORNE
Outline Introduction Trap Index Calculation Trigger Points Trap Surveillance Data ULV Application Questions
Introduction Map reconnaissance –Conducted 2 May 03 –Identified trap locations Mosquito Trap Deployment –Initially deployed 5 traps, currently expanded to 8 –Numerous traps stolen –Trap 7 nights a week used Deployed Ops HdBk (LTC Robert) to 4 Vector Surveillance –Daily identify & count mosquitoes & sandflies in traps –Compute trap index and compare to trigger points –Test Anopheles mosquitoes if trapped for malaria –Prepare sandflies for testing by 520 th TAML
Introduction Adult Mosquito Control –ULV application based upon trap index & trigger points –Conducted at 2000 until route completed –3 control routes on LSA Anaconda –Routes determined by number of mosquitoes trapped along route Control Evaluation –Control efficacy determined by trap index after spraying –Determines what pesticide to use –To date SCOURGE is the insecticide used Safe Effective Same chemical used in USA for West Nile Virus mosquito control
Trap Index Calculation # of Mosquitoes trapped # of Traps x # of nights Adult Female Mosquito Index = 93 8 x 1 = =
Trigger Points Trigger Point = Suppression action initiated Vector Suppression Trigger Point = Trap Index of 1 mosquito –If 1 Anopheles mosquito is trapped, suppression action is initiated –Anopheles mosquitoes are the only (VECTORS) carriers of malaria Nuisance Suppression Trigger Point = Trap Index of 5 mosquitoes –If 5 of any other type of mosquito is trapped, control action is initiated. –Nuisance mosquitoes do not vector disease, but do bite.
ULV Application Triggered by Trap Index Applies insecticide in a “fog” of very small particles (8-30 microns) Particles float in the air, sunset to sun rise. Mosquitoes fly into fog & die. Weather conditions can preclude spray ops –too windy or rain Home station PMCS/Trng
Upon arrival at LSAA –Immediate help –Numerous requests Problems identified –No FST –No FST equipment –No repellant –No treated uniforms –Minimal bed nets
Education = Problem solving –Proper use of OH equipment –NSNs to order equipment –FST trng class –Unit level trng
Offered Permethrin bed net treatments
Combined calibration 255 th & 792 nd MED DETs
Identification Mosquito species trapped: Ochlerotatus caspius Culex pipiens complex Culiseta longiareolata VecTest for Anopheles 10 total for the season
Improvised release stations
Larval
AAR CON –Larval treatments work? Didn’t look at age of mosquitoes Different soldiers conducted dips Water level greatly reduced on post –Better at identifying mosquitoes thru resources No regional keys on hand Harbach (1985) only key PROS –When we left everyone begged us to come back –Used 4 out of 6 pieces of entomology equipment on MTOE –Real world missions
