Language Arts New Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Reading Series, Trade Books, Poetry Sequencing- order of story events Connect – Looking for ways to connect the text to self, another text, or the world. Daily 5 During our reading time this year, we will be doing "The Daily Five". The term "The Daily Five" refers to the five choices that the students will be able to choose once the program is up and running. First, we will do a whole group lesson on topics including reading strategies, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and writing. After our whole group lesson, students will break up into groups and do 2 sessions of Daily Five choices. During the group time, I will also be pulling students to work in small groups or sometimes individually on reading skills and assessments.

Book Reviews Students must read a minimum of 5 books for independent reading per trimester. Students complete a book review for all independent reading. They are required to read 20 minutes each night. After completing a book students should complete a book review. Book reviews are double sided. One side per book. Students may complete the review at home or in school. Book reviews are always available in the classroom. Students are responsible for turning in the book reviews as they finish each one. Books read should be chapter books at the student’s reading level.

Weekly Homework Students will copy homework and notes into their planner every day. Please check and initial the planner nightly. Weekly homework will usually include spelling homework, reading for 20 minutes, and math homework each night from Monday-Thursday. Any worksheets needed, will be in the HOMEWORK folder. Spelling notebooks will be utilized for weekly spelling homework. Spelling will be an “Activity Menu” format. There will be a sample page in the front of the book that will outline how students should set up their page and choice. Students may choose which 4 activities to complete. Spelling tests will be every Friday.

Other Important Information We have a 15 minute snack break every morning at 9:55. Please provide your child with a healthy snack each day. Water only for drinks, please. Our lunch time is not until 1:15 P.M. It is a very long morning and we are all working hard! Bedtime Please be sure that your child gets to bed early each night. Children of this age group require about 10 hours of sleep. A regular bedtime is a good habit that will demonstrate to your child that school is important! Breakfast Starting off the day with a healthy breakfast is another way to ensure your child’s success in school. They will feel more energized and ready to face the day with a full stomach. Room Temperature The temperature in our room tends to fluctuate. If a student is cold, they must wear the School Lane uniform sweater over their uniform shirt. Students may not wear a non-uniform sweater or sweatshirt. They may wear a long sleeve short under the uniform shirt.

It may take up to 10 days to verify and accept your new log-in information. You will not receive a confirmation that your log-in is ready to use.

Conferences Please make sure before you leave today, that you sign up for report card conferences that are held in December. This will help ensure that you get a time that works for you! A reminder will go home with your child closer to the date.
