The JWOD Program will now be called AbilityOne Will refer to AbilityOne (formerly the Javits-Wagner- O’Day Program) over the next 18 months to allow for a smooth transition New name will increase awareness and better communicate the mission and program identity JWOD/AbilityOne Updates
1938: Senator Wagner & Congresswomen O’Day lead an effort to create employment for people who are blind by providing products to the Federal government: Wagner- O’Day Act 1971: Senator Jacob Javits leads effort to amend the original Act to encompass opportunities for people with severe disabilities (law becomes Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act) History of AbilityOne
1974: NISH is created at the suggestion of Congress to promote the Program and provide CRP's with technical assistance Currently, over 2,848 AbilityOne contracts are being performed for the Federal Government thru NISH To date over 2,047 available providers with access to a pool of approximately 21 Million potential employees

National disability statistics: 17 Million+ Americans have severe disabilities 70% of this Population is not employed AbilityOne is the single largest employer of people with severe disabilities Over 47,000 employees in FY06 Currently there are over 2,800 AbilityOne contracts being performed for the Federal Government. AbilityOne Facts How AbilityOne defines a severe disability “ A severe physical or mental impairment (residual limiting condition resulting from an injury, disease, or congenital defect) which so limits the person’s functional capabilities (mobility, communication, self-care, self- direction, work tolerance, or work skills) that the individual is unable to engage in normal competitive employment over an extended period of time”.
