Considine BLB Text: Exploring (Corporate) Strategy, 2008 or 2011, © Pearson Education Ltd 4 How is the Module Structured? Lectures There will be typically 12 one-hour lectures, but some week these may go on for 1.5 hours or so In Lectures we will deliver the basic strategic theories, tools, models and concepts Large Group Workshops Some times we will have instead of an extended lecture, workshop sessions, topic related media and possibly guest speakers (real and/or virtual),

Considine BLB Text: Exploring (Corporate) Strategy, 2008 or 2011, © Pearson Education Ltd 5 How is the Module Structured? Tutorials/Labs You have already been allocated to a tutorial group and you are expected to stay in this group for the duration of the module Each tutorial group will be broken down into smaller groups of about 6 students. You will be given case base tutorial tasks to prepare in independent learning time (outside of scheduled classes) In addition to the case work you will need to prepare answer to the self test questions given in the module guide and your learning portfolio assessments In the tutorials each groups will present their answers to the rest of the class You are expected to prepare you own notes on both the lectures, reading and case findings On the APRIL Simulation – in intially some time will be in the labs – but you need to put in team time outside class contact to stay ahead of the competition! (your colleagues in other teams…)

Considine BLB Text: Exploring (Corporate) Strategy, 2008 or 2011, © Pearson Education Ltd 6 How is the Module Structured? Formative Assessment: A choice of one brief learning exercise based upon the case work covered during the first 5 weeks. Submitted during November and a prerequisite to the final assessment. Final Assessment Part 1. A Strategic Case study, submitted in January 2012 and based on the APRIL Strategy Simulation. Weighted at 75% Part 2. A selection two “Learning Portfolios” submitted in January 2012 at the same time as the above, based upon the EMC case study: Weighted at 25% The simulation case assignment will be handed-out to you and made available on Blackboard. You will need to attend all of the lectures and tutorials to pass the assessments. You must attend punctually as you may not be allowed in to the room if you arrive late.

Considine BLB Text: Exploring (Corporate) Strategy, 2008 or 2011, © Pearson Education Ltd 7 To answer the assessed questions successfully you will have to apply strategic tools, models and concepts – just like we will be doing in the tutorials The tutorial sessions group case work and self managed tasks are intended to help you prepare for the both he portfolios and the final assignment and not least for your future career On this module the required time for independent study is 120 hours

Considine BLB Text: Exploring (Corporate) Strategy, 2008 or 2011, © Pearson Education Ltd 8 Assumptions This module aims to build on the work that you have previously covered on other business modules. and therefore assumes that you are familiar with the basics of external analysis including concepts and frameworks such as: PEST or derivatives such as PESTEL Michael Porter’s 5-Forces Analysis We will however be re-visiting such frameworks again on this module.
