The French and Indian War (also called the Seven Years’ War)

By 1750, the American colonies were bursting with growth. In only a century, the population of the colonies had grown from 50,000 to more than 1,000,000 people. What caused this rapid growth? Cheap land? Religious tolerance? Economic opportunity? All of these were important in pulling people to the colonies. But there was also another reason. For over a century, the British government had practiced SALUTARY NEGLECT, mostly leaving the colonists alone to solve their own problems and make their own decisions. Before 1763

Our name for the war makes people think that the war involved the French fighting the Indians, but that’s not accurate! In fact, France, French colonists, and some Native American tribes fought on one side, while Britain, British colonists and some other Native American tribes fought on the other. Who’s Fighting?

As the colonies grew, British settlers started to dream of moving across the Appalachian Mountains into the Ohio Valley, but both Britain and France claimed the area. The British and French both want control two major areas. The first is the Ohio Valley, which provided fur traders with access to east coast cities and ports for the purpose of trade. They also both claimed the Mississippi River Valley because it was the entry point to the west, which would allow access to mile after mile of land. What Are They Fighting For?

Britain won the war, and in the Treaty of Paris of 1763, France ceded (gave up) all land east of the Mississippi River to Britain. Even though they won, Britain was left in debt (their national debt doubled from this war) and started to heavily tax the colonists, claiming the colonists are the ones who benefitted from the war. In addition, Britain left 10,000 soldiers in the colonies. Consequences of the War

The Proclamation Line of 1763

Look at the map…what geographic feature is in the same place as the new boundary of the 13 Colonies? With the Proclamation Line of 1763, any travel or settlement past the mountains was illegal/ prohibited.

Don’t Go West, Young Man Britain thinks… if colonists move west over the mountains, it will be too challenging to control trade and taxes and impossible to avoid conflict with Native Americans The colonists think… they fought hard for the new land and should get to settle on it

The Proclamation of 1763 was very unpopular with the colonists. Colonial blood had been shed to fight the French and Indians, and many felt they had the right to go settle on the land that was won. After the war, colonial governments had started planning an expansion into the new western territory. Now they were being told they couldn’t expand and explore. This angered the colonists. They felt the proclamation was meant to control them and that the British only wanted them east of the mountains so they could keep an eye on them. As a result, colonists rebelled against the law just like they did with the mercantile laws. Many moved westward toward the Ohio River Valley. Colonists believed that if they acted together, it would be nearly impossible for the British to enforce the law. Proclaim and Inflame!
