SECESSION IN OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES Art Neoveau was a “new art” or “modern style” which spread across Europe and America in the 1890s. The "modern style" was known by different names in each country: Art Nouveau in France, the Liberty style in England, Jugendstil in Germany, Sezessionstil in Austria, Stile Liberty in Italy, and Modernista or Modernisme in Spain.

VIENNA SECESSION The Vienna Secession was formed in This movement included painters, sculptors, and architects. The first president of the Secession was Gustav Klimt. Rudolf von Alf was made honorary president. Its official magazine was called Ver Sacrum.

ART NOVEAU Characteristics new style spread rapidly throughout Europe at the end of the 19th century. Characterised by decorative and curvilinear designs. The style followed exotic trends but was faithful to regional traditions. This modern style could be seen in art, design, and architecture. It could be seen also in the decorative arts, graphic work, and illustration.

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN It was a style of architecture and interior design using flat patterns of writhing vegetable forms. Today Cast-iron lilies and copper tendrils are still seen around us. Furniture with heart-shaped holes in it.

GUSTAV KLIMT ( ) Biography Gustav Klimt was the leader of the Vienna Secession movement from 1897 to He was born in Baumgarten, near Vienna. His father was an engraver working with gold and silver. Klimt began his formal art training at the Vienna School of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule), and at age twenty, he started his own studio. The studio was quite a success and he received many commissions from museums theatres, and other institutions. He became an honorary member of the University of Munich and the University of Vienna. He died three years later in Vienna at 56

GUSTAV KLIMT Art work His art style was highly decorative He applied most often gold and silver colours. His most famous painting The Kiss, was first exhibited in In 1894, Klimt was commissioned to create three paintings to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall of the Vienna´s University,But the painting was scandalized by the sensual, nude, and erotic theme. He also designed posters and worked as an illustrator for magazines. In 1905 Klimt definitely left the Vienna Secession after disagreements with Josef Hofmann.

ALFONS MUCHA biography Alfons Mucha was born in Southern Moravia in At the age of seventeen Mucha left his home, to work as a painter of stage decorations at the Vienna During this time he produced a large number of sketches and drawings. These were studies for illustrations, which were later published in "Figaro illustré Sarah Bernhardt famost actress was an inspiration for his work. Mucha designed her posters but also her costumes and stages.

MUCHA AND HIS CARRER Mucha was very popular by the public and was celebrated master almost over night. Mucha's theoretical theses influenced the applied art of the time and afterward. "Mucha style" was typical for: the arabesque hair and the aureole surrounding, where the female profile, were often copied.

MUCHA IN AMERICA Alfons Mucha spent time in America, where he produced wall decorations, stages settings and portraits during a the stay in New York. He also taught drawing and composition at the Chicago Art Institute. After Mucha's lithographic work: he became increasingly occupied by a series of 20 pictures entitled lithographic.
