To have a shared target of reductions. To get some deals as a group they might not get as individuals.

It’s all a bit of a waste! Some museums have already started taking actions to change, others are still at the beginning stage. Each museum has agreed to: Take monthly readings of your energy usage and bills This will help you know when your actions are making a difference and the figures and information will be shared between us all at regular meetings. Sort out a simple sustainability Policy and Action plan This will help stop your changes being ignored, ‘de-prioritised’ or left on the shelf. Set out some goals for the duration of the programme - and beyond. eg we aim to reduce our bills/CO2/waste by ….20% by March 2015 £586, on energy bills every year 1,311 tonnes of CO 2 Which is the equivalent of digitising nearly 59,000 objects from our collections AND providing 49,000 learning session places. Which is 28 baby elephants worth of CO2 a year, or the equivalent of travelling 1.4 times round the equator in an average petrol car!

Free lighting reviews. Created a simple ‘energy savings calculator’ to show return on investment

Brought Energy Action Group on board eg. Shakespeare Birthplace reduce KwH unit costs by 40% Sustainability West Midlands Local Authority Energy Managers Group – schools and other building programmes National Trust Making use of existing networks and support outside of the museum world:

Lessons With help, tiny places can translate what the big guys do. Monitor, monitor monitor. Don’t assume that anyone really has a grip of their usage or their bills. Spend time with them making sure they do it - should be anymore difficult than basic collection care housekeeping. It’s a management issue! In business terms we are tiny – individual access to finance – eg through LEPs, euro funding for capital change is still difficult
