FALL 2012 FACULTY ADVISING SEMINAR

Jones College Admission Policy-Fall 2012  Minimum 30 hours of degree credits earned (excluding Learning Support and High School Deficiencies)  Completion of high school deficiencies and learning support requirements  Cumulative GPA of on all college level course-work  A 2.25 average among these four designated pre-business courses: ACTG 2110 ECON 2410 ECON 2420 QM 2610  Fall 2007-Summer 2012 (2.25 GPA and 2.00 on the four courses)  Prior to Fall 2007-no policy

Jones College Admission Policy  Students tend to avoid taking the required MATH 1630 or 1810 which may delay admission  One of these Math classes must be taken prior to QM 2610  A college-level MATH course is a required prerequisite to ACTG 2110

Jones College Graduation Requirements (Fall )  GPA  Major  Minor  Best 42 upper-division hours  Jones College core (ACTG, BCEN, ECON, FIN, INFS, MGMT, MKT and QM courses)  60 Senior College Hours  Watch those with community college work—make sure they will have the Senior College hours

High School Deficiencies  No longer a condition for graduation (except US History)  was sent to all those enrolled in High School Deficiency courses  There are no refunds for this semester  Still may appear on Academic Deficiency Summary until process is complete

Advising Hold-Release

Immunization Hold  Due to state requirements new students entering the university Fall 2011 are required to have two doses of the Varicella Vaccine (Chicken Pox) in addition to MMR  Students were allowed to sign an extension form in order to register for 12 or more hours  For those who signed the extension: Vaccination and/or proof of immunity is required by Nov. 4  Those who do not provide proof by Nov. 4 will have a hold placed on their registration for Spring 2012

Degree Audit  Is available for students  You may use this feature to determine whether or not substitutions are needed  You may use this feature to determine whether or not a student has filed an Intent to Graduate  Questions?  Examples of advisees

Degree Audit

US History Requirement  History  In accordance with the revision of the state law MTSU will accept any transfer course that met that student’s General Education requirement for HISTORY  If the transfer institution did not have a History category then a combination of History courses may satisfy  Only applies to TRANSFER students TBR, UT, private and out of state public and private institutions  Contact Ann Reaves at The appropriate adjustment will be made to the students Degree Evaluation or attributes on the Transfer Evaluation

International Students  MTSU has a new initiative to escalate the number of international students on campus  We strongly suggest that these students obtain a WES (World Education Service) or some other professional agency evaluate their work  Not only will it assist in the evaluation process for their degree, but many employers are now requiring a copy

Meredith Young-Retention Advisor  Meredith will be working with our at risk students  She will also be helping connect students with opportunities such as EXL, Honors, and Study Abroad  Please contact Meredith if you know of a student who needs assistance

Help Labs!  Tutoring Resources  Accounting BAS N428  Biology  Chemistry  Computer Science KOM 361C  Economics & Finance  Math for prescribed Math courses for all other Math  PSCI  QM/Statistics BAS N347  Writing  Research Coach MTSU Library

Universal Transfer Path (UTP)  UTPs are binding agreements which we must honor  MTSU faculty representatives met with other TBR/UT personnel to develop the Transfer Paths  Paths were developed for Accounting, Business Administration, Economics (BBA & BS) and Computer Information Systems

Universal Transfer Path (UTP)  Technical Systems is working on coding for Transcripts or under Test Scores to identify students who graduated under UTP  Community Colleges now operating under common numbering  Elimination of QM 2610 from some CC curriculum- will only teach MATH 1530 (Applied Statistics)

Universal Transfer Paths (UTP)  Due to separate General Education criteria and specific UTP course requirements the upper-division forms for these students are going to be altered  There are still questions for which we do not have answers. Those have been submitted to TBR  I have customized upper-division forms for these majors that you may use.

Business Minors Fall 2012  Beginning Fall 2012 students will be allowed to choose their own business minor  Every student must select one business minor  A student still has the option to add as many non- business minors as they wish  Policy is retroactive for all active catalogs:   

MINOR ADVISING: POINTS TO REMEMBER  Business majors must have one business minor (they cannot have two)  Courses calculated into the student’s major cannot be included in the minor (those marked MAJ on the Upper Division form) Business CORE and any Major Auxiliary courses may be used in the minor  Students must complete all business CORE requirements, regardless of the minor selection  Check residency requirements for each minor  The major and minor must be from the same catalog year  Students may not major and minor in the same subject area i.e. ACTG majors cannot have the ACTG/INFS minor  Remind students that choosing a different business minor may add courses beyond the 120 hours required for the degree  Students receiving any kind of financial aid or Lottery Scholarship should speak with a Financial Aid Representative before changing and/or taking courses in the new minor  When your advisee is ready to file his/her Upper Division form and wants a business minor other than the incorporated minor, the minor portion must also be signed

Minors cont.  The incorporated minors of Business Administration and Economics and Finance will remain attached to the program of study  These will only be ‘detached’ from the program with the completed ‘elective minor’ section on the back of the upper-division form and a signature  Those minors other that the incorporated will likely require more than 120 hours

How does the student change the minor? Business Administration MinorEconomics/Finance Minor

Minors cont.  The most important rule regarding these optional minors is this one: You may not use the same course in a major and a minor  If the course is being calculated in the major (MAJ) then you MAY NOT use it in the minor  You may crossover CORE courses

If the course is being calculated in the major (MAJ) then you MAY NOT use it in the minor

Student wants Economics Minor-  ECON 2410  ECON 2420  ECON Upper-Division  Can they use ECON 3210 for this minor? Finance MajorEconomics Minor
